I picked up a sweet 1" drive 36" long breaker bar and a nice six point 1" drive impact socket this week both off of ebay. I told my wife "Now this is a man sized tool !"

I however can not seem to source an extension drive for it. I need one around 5" long in order to clear the rear wheel when taking off the rear axle nuts.

Any one know of a source?

Also how much torque will this bar be putting on the nut when I go to re install the nuts? It is 36" long. If I have to I can use an extender pipe to get more torque.

you should be able to get the part you need from the local snap-on or Matco distributor/truck ask at your local service garage.
or my local NAPA stocks large sized tools.. not as pricey as the larger name brand either.

leverage is derived from distance from the fulcrum, not the girth of the socket or bar. 100#s at 12" is 300#s at 36" you should not need additional leverage length. if a 200# man stands on the end that's ~600#s force. but with a 5" extension you won't be able to stand all your weight on the bar without it slipping off.

Best..
Dan

Thanks for the info I will try NAPA.

I figured I would need a support on the socket to keep it horizontal. Like a 2 X 4 or floor jack.

Take a jack stand and put it right under the extension.

If it's a decent stand it should have a ditch or dimple in the center of it.

Lay the extesion right in there, and it'll roll without trying to follow the movement of the breaker bar & socket as your jumping on it.

Simple.

Actually what he meant was 100#s at 36" is the same as 300#s at 12". Foot pounds is just what it sounds like. Pounds times the foot length of the bar (fulcrum). For 360 foot pounds on the 36" bar (3 ft) place 120 pounds at the 3 foot end of the bar. Smile
