I've come across several sets of these at various swap meets, I always like them for the different and cool factor!
The ones shown in the early pictures when this thread started, also look to me like someone had some parts and tried to build their own set.
The bolts have head stamp markings that appear to be Unified thread bolts, the 3 hash marks signify a grade 5 hardened steel bolt with American threads on it. American and metric bolt head stampings are different, those certainly look to be American. Not surprising, as a lot of machinists didn't used to have metric taps and drills readily available to them.
It's likely the same guy made some rotors, to replace the worn out steel ones?> from much easier to machine aluminum. Aluminum rotors have in fact been used successfully in race applications... but every one I have seen has been coated with a flame-sprayed or plated steel process to give the wear surface the friction and wear characteristics of steel, but the light weight and heat transfer of aluminum. I've not seen bare aluminum used as a wear surface. _________________ 2-time NASA Pro Racing Champion, Bonneville 130 Club and 150 Club Memeber, BRS Pro Gas racer |

I have a matched pair of Maico's to suit Type 3.
Both use aluminium hubs and use the exact same studs pressed into them as 356B Porsche (same as my 356B Porsche rear drum studs).
I recently had the pads re-lined by a brake shop and my disks are still as new so didn't need to get them re-made, but I agree with John that laser cutting new ones would be a piece of cake.
Below is my NOS Maico:
This is the bracket for T3 use (4 bolt's for mounting).
I am looking forward to bolting the restored Maico's onto my 1964 Notchback one day.
Enjoy. _________________ Aaron

Does anyone know what the value is on a set of these brakes? A friend called me the other day asking if I was interested or knew of anyone interested in buying his. He said he has a complete set and another set that is about 3/4 there. Everything is used but apparently in nice condition. I'm not interested but if I can help him out with an approximate value, I know he'd appreciate it. I think one of his sets came off a 1961 Bug and I'm pretty sure all of his rotors are steel. Thx. _________________ My Beetles :

I've seen sets at swap meets from time to time... seems like $400-$600 for a complete working set but needing cosmetic freshening wouldn't be out of line. Less if the calipers are frozen and pads need renewing. Less still if major machine work is needed. _________________ 2-time NASA Pro Racing Champion, Bonneville 130 Club and 150 Club Memeber, BRS Pro Gas racer |

I also had a pair of these, had it completely restored and installed for a week! I never quite felt at ease having them on the car and consequently had them removed and sold them. I'm sure they're safe but just me, didn't trust the prehistoric quality I got the CSP once instead and they were fantastic. Nonethelss, they look absolutely beautiful! _________________ Are you under the impression you'll live forever? All that shit you're hoarding is meaningless. You never know what's around the corner. i've got some Maico brakes on my cars they work fine on them .
I've got the aluminum ones on my 1953 Zwitter and the steel ones on my 1960 Swivel seat bus.
there is some info over the differences between the steel and aluminum
ones on my little internet site under www.uiterwijk-winkel.be
i hope this will help some people out here

7 years late, but I figured that if anyone else was looking for info on these Maico brakes like I am, and wondered what the calipers on swanlakers' photo were, they're off of a 1970s Honda motorcycle. _________________ Rusty '62 L360 seeblau, L289 blauweiß Type 1 Karmann Ghia |

Wow, those would look so cool under the front of my Berry Mini-T, perhaps with Wilwood Dynalite single floater calipers. I think a set of hubs would be all that would be needed to build this up. _________________

@ Mr. B
I have a set of Macio Brakes that I bought from Empi a long time ago, hoping to find a proper car to use them on. Since they have sat up in storage for so long
the seals on the pistons have dried up and rotted.
One thing I noted, there are two different seals on one piston and just a single seal on the other piston. The calipers are ok, but can't find a proper seal for the pistons.

How do thease spin on the car? To me it looks like the caliper would be stoped by the down word facing prongs of the rotor _________________ Ruby red 1967 beetle sedan with a 2021cc

If you look closely at the picture Brian posted you will see that these brakes are opposite normal disc brakes. In a conventional disc brake setup the rotor is attached to the hub in the center and the caliper bracket attaches to the outside. With this setup the rotor attaches to the hub from the outside and the caliper bracket attaches toward the center. That is why I think they would look cool on my rather open Berry Mini-T. _________________

Just to keep this thread going.
I have been running Maico's on my Oval for a couple of years. They work very well but one of the cylinders was leaking. I have just received them back after having them refurbished. The guys who did the work said they had never seen a set before- no surprise - but that everything was standard sizes so it wasn't a problem honing, getting seals etc. It looks like they have been sleeved previously.
They go back on the car next week. I'll report if there are any problems.

@ Dinsdale
I still have not been able to find seals for the calipers on my brakes. Could you let me know what you were able to find for seals.
Thanks
