Louis, do you realize the whole restoration team is GERMAN? Why on earth would they ever consider publishing the restoration of THEIR car in some foreign language?
I'm willing to bet they didn't publish the book to make money. I think they did it to share with the world.

there is no way they did it to just share the resto, they could have done it here on samba for free, those folks are selling 230$ pictures of their car...
all about money in this case. they probably have to pay for that incredible restoration and there was such a popular following here on Samba that they decided to capitalize. simple and smart, but english translation would have been smarter.

it cost money to make a nice book like that.
i understand that they are german,
i am french, so what, everybody speaks english, bottom line! don't you think we all want to be able to read what they did? pictures is not enough in this case. too much good info, interesting stuff.
how many people speak german compare to english, do the math.

let me know when you translate it, i have money ready!

Easy now, this car was definetely not restored to make any money, as we all have witnessed, it is a result of a glowing passion and a once in a lifetime chance to do something worthwile in bringing back a believed lost prototype. What struck me since I started following this post was that the lack of professional, Pebble Beach class, limitless funds attitude, and the collective work in that small workshop, done by enthusiasts, not for free I guess but still a long way from your average Jay Leno type restauration. I dig Jay Leno, but he obviously has funding above your average vintage car enthusiast. In my opinion he could not have pulled off a similar restoration without spending maybe 5 or 10 times as much. The price of those original VW 38 headlights would have gone up if you had a call from JL, asking to buy them.

Back to the book, I paid less than 30 euros for that beautiful book, not a bad price at all. Compared to the quality of the photography the price was more in the range of cheap coffee table books.

Whether the framed photos with bits of the original steel is worth 200 dollars I will leave to the collectors, however I doubt that those sales will come a long way in paying for the restauration.

I'd like to make one point however. It has been claimed that the book was not published for some VW nerds. Who else has any interest in scrutinizing all the details in the front suspension of a 1930's VW prototype, or the finer details of the underside of the reupholstered seats? I think that most of the target buyers of that book would be exactly that, VW nerds. For them, the text may be a little generalized. The photos however, are pure porn.

'those people' are not selling pictures for that money. Axel, who is one of the best german professional photographs had the idea to make these limited memorials after a couple of people ask. It s not just a picture, it is art. No one earns money with that and if you see how much time Axel spend into the photos and the book, it is his right to get something back.

Making the book was the nice idea of Axel and the publisher Delius Klasing who is one of the best in buisness. The risk is on their side and so they have to decide what is finaly inside. If the selling is good, there is a good chance to publish it also in English language. Or to make a special edition with more details and information.

If you read this thread from the beginning you will find out that I was also involved in the project and I helped the author for the informations he need. Even myself have to order and pay for my books at amazon and even I didn't have one of Axel's brilliant memorials. You don't have to cry about the costs of the pictures because as far as I know the strong limited issue is sold out. Everybody could count together howmuch money Axel earns with this handfull of pictures, divide it with the houndreds of hours he spend for the project and how much left. If you know the high costs of a professional photo production inclusive renting a studio, high-end equipment and hours and hours of digital afterworks you maybe find out that it was not the best deal in his life...

let me know when you translate it, i have money ready![/quote]

Easy now, this car was definitely not restored to make any money, ..........

That was not Louis' point, he only said that the book was a business venture, and that they may have missed a big market opportunity. And I agree with him. Minimally, it was done to "make money" to pay for the publishing costs, which I know are very high. Nobody would venture into such a project and not hope to cover their costs.

I agree that they missed a majority market by not making an English version, but it is also a wise business move to release an initial version in the native German, then do another publication later.

As for the comments about not enough detail on the resto, of course I too would love to see/read about all the details, but I can see that this book was not intended to be that. It is an "art" book, that introduces the reader (VW nerd or not) to the project and its history. It looks to be very well done and I too hope their is an English version one day. Hats off to the all involved with the publishing of this book....

Axel you are an amazing photographer! It's hard to beleive the cover of the book is an acutal picture of the car! And the paint is incredible! I wish there were more color photographs of the original prototypes. Come to think of it, Nr.1 has a photo in color and its gray in color..

Thank you! Cool
When you find color pics of Number 6, please post them Laughing
We were lucky about the bw pics we get from the protoyp museum in Hamburg/Germany. As i know there are only a few original color pics from the
prototyps in 1938.

yes, these are pics from the Groundbreaking in 1938 at the "town of the kdf wagen", later known as Wolfsburg. These pics are very popular and full of nazi stuff. We don´t want to show to much of these symbols in our book. In germany we still have problems with these symbols and sometimes with the law..... Confused

What a weird feeling looking at the pictures of these wonderful cars surrounded by those horrible Nazis. It is just a snapshot of history and something we need to remember so that it never happens again. Surely something as good as these cars would have to come from the hearts and minds of good people...

Very aptly said. It is "Ars Gratia Artis" In my opinion too, which is why I didn't hesitate to buy my own editions. [both book AND limited edition framed, signed photos] See my Gallery pic:

It would be just as wrong to ignore that it happened. If we fail to learn from past mistakes, we will surely make them again in the future.

Peace and congrats to all involved! I will wait patiently for an English version. Is there a way to start a list for people who want an English version? Perhaps if enough people showed interest, the publishing company would see fit to produce an English version. Just my two cents.

Again, thanks to all for sharing, publishing, restoring, photographing, and connecting all the historic dots that were so necessary to finishing the 38. Very Happy

Just got my copy of the book today (I am in Adelaide, South Australia) and although I can't read the text very well, the book does everything I think you set out to do without boring the reader with minor details.

Great value and the photo's alone justify the purchase.

Thank you for going to the effort.
