So how often is the old man driven? I'm sure that with it being 1 of 2 prototypes known, no too often. But I mean shoot, rural Germany, there can't be that many people around who would run into it. Also, has anyone been able to identify it out in public that isn't part of this site? Or do they just generalize it as being "another old beetle?"

Do you remember your toy you got at christmas two years ago? If not, you maybe remember the toy you got at last. Because thats the toy you are actually using for play. Like every child. The good thing is that you always can 'play' with the 38 - but other toys like the Heb, denzel, Porsche Carrera or the Mille Miglia Spit takes more fun, some other cars are better for use if you have a young family.

Understood. But in that regard, I was just curious to know if this is more of a museum piece or something that gets driven around every once in awhile. I could only imagine what it must be like looking at Christian's collection and deciding which car will be driven that day.

Who ever thoght that there are no surprises in the life, he should read this update of the VW38. 38/06 will get an originale E60-engine from 1938 back! An austrian guy bought it in 1948 as sparepart for his Typ 82 but couldn't use it so that the engine was stocked in his barn. He passed away last year with an age of 98 years. When the family cleaned up the areal, they even found old VW-parts, the Type 82 which was stocked in the same barn since 1957, a 1953-Karmann-Police convertible which was the secound car after the Kübelwagen - and the engine. Last christmas, the granddaughter who owned the areal gave the VW38-book as a christmas-gift to his husband and while he was reading the book, he remebered the old engine back in the old barn...

The engine has the number 38/16 and was installed in the 7th ever delivered Volkswagen beetle No. 16. It was a rollback-rooved beetle delivered to Dr. Bodo Laverentz, some of you might know the car from the Karlsbad-Roadmovie. After this car was distroyed by an accident, the engine came into another beetle - a 1939 model with Chassisnumber 1 - 43. This car was delivered to Dr. Dyckhoff, who was the general director of the Volkswagen factory.

Another original prototypeparts were found by a friend of Christian in Bavaria last month. Original complete cablebraks. They are handmade and mountaid once a time on VW 39/42

Bouth new found parts will be going for a carefully, sensible restoration and will be installed into VW38/06 for the next saision...

Hi,

this is the marking from the Austrian government - because the engine was used in another car and for the papers the car had to get the new number 1947

Bye Christian

I like how this thread was revived from the dead! I forgot to ask, were there any additional cooling tin pieces found? Like a fanshroud? Or will you guys continue to use the one that is on there currently?

This is likely a secret you'll take to the grave, but how on earth are you finding these parts?

Also build question, how did you fill imperfections in the body? Did you use modern body filler, did you use lead? did you even fill any imperfections?

Like most serious collectors in any sector of any interest...networking. Everybody does it in some small way..."I know someone, who knows someone etc."

Christian and his team network in their own specialised area; an area we'd never get to hear about.

That and living in the country of the car's origin and living less the 50km from the Wolfsburg plant...And they're famous so I'm sure those who know of them call if they find any remotely old VW piece or part.
