The five high quality negatives sold for 782 €, that is about $1000. I hope they ended up in the right hands. |

I know I'm going on about it here but no one has actually replied (of those who are in the know).
When is the English version of the book coming out?
Thank you.

Neat! Maybe I'll give my German version to a German friend of ours as a present. It is a very beautiful book, whether in German or English. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

Today the last details for the english version
of the book "The first Beetle" (Der erste Brezelkäfer)
are clarified.
You can buy the english version in March or April 2014! |
Shouldn't the title read " Restoration of a Prototype from 1938" Or "Resurrection of a Prototype from 1938" ?
"Re-creation" would assume it was made entirely of new parts to look like an original where "restoration" would mean that an original piece in need of some form of refurbishing was brought back to like new condition. _________________ Formerly known in the forums as "OVALTEEN"

That dredges up a whole debate that happened about 150 pages ago. Best to stick with recreation and leave it at that. |

Restoration implies that one starts with most of an original car.
In this case, I think that Recreation is accurate, as they started with a shell and painstakingly recreated and assembled the running gear from many sources.
For the very pedantic, Restoration/Recreation would cover all the bases.
Regardless, thanks for the English version of the book! |

"Resurrection" would be more correct, as translation for 'wiederauferstehung', used for the German edition. I hope the cover shown is not the final version. |

I'm aware of the debate and I can see it from both sides of the fence. I just feel recreation takes away the fact that THIS is in fact one of THE original prototypes. I feels he word "recreation" cheapens it. I do agree with the last poster, "Resurrection" is more correct and I think that word alone punctuates the effort that went in to bringing it back to its former glory from the condition it was in when it was left for dead. _________________ Formerly known in the forums as "OVALTEEN"

Recreation is not a demeaning term in the classic car world. Recreations of outstanding classic cars can still cost a huge amount of money. Some are true to the original and use many original parts or even original chassis or bodies, others have certain "improvements". I certainly don't want to "resurrect" the debate but here is an example:

as a translator myself (though not actually working as one) i have to agree, resurrection would be a much better choice
then again maybe the grundmanns see their activities as a from of recreation, rather than a re-creation _________________ regards

Belgianboxer is correct in that "resurrection" or "resurgence" is the direct translation of the German "Wiederauferstehung". Personally I think "resurrection" is the best fit in English- to me, it is the best word in this context to describe the process of the "rise from the ashes" of this car. Recreation implies that it is a replica or a simulation, which it most certainly isn't.
I'm sure the choice of words used in the translation of this book into English will cause many debates once we all have a copy and have read it. However, let's just be happy that there is an English version coming! |

Consider the religious implications of the word "resurrection." Any artifact from the Third Reich should probably steer clear of any comparison, no matter how indirect. (And yes, I know the car was displayed in a church!)
Anyway, I stand by my original edict:

Though I'm sure we can debate it a few more pages at least. |

The problem is that in English the word recreation has the connotation of “fake”. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

Excellent news, and not a moment too soon!
I really don’t care about the nuances of choice of words for the translation but I do wonder if there will be extra information included (to compensate for the wait) such as a chapter on the VW38 gearbox and engine that were found after the original book was published. Perhaps some of the numerous photos of “06” that have surfaced in recent years or a short report on the numerous shows that “06” has participated in including HO 2013 or the trek into the Alps in Austria or just any new information that may have emerged in the last few years …
Nevertheless a big thanks to Delius Klasing publishers and everyone involved with the book for following up with our requests for an English version. Can I put my name down on the wish-list already? |

Good news that they announced a release date for the English version of the book. Everyone should be happy about that, it has been a long wait with many requests for it. Now there is a light at the end of the tunnel so quit complaining about the title and what it means, it means you can read the story. Enjoy it. Just my .02 cents. _________________ http://www.oldtimeroldspeedclub.blogspot.com/

I completely agree.
Having the word "recreation" on the cover would be a HUGE MISTAKE.
Recreation means the car is NOT an original Volkswagen but something home made to look the same. In other words a fake. _________________
