I completely agree.
Having the word "recreation" on the cover would be a HUGE MISTAKE.

Recreation means the car is NOT an original Volkswagen but something home made to look the same. In other words a fake.

And the VERY reason I asked the question as to why "Re-creation" is on the cover, it makes no sense to use that word on a book about a genuine vehicle. Anybody who wasn't in the know that this is a genuine prototype would think it was just a fake/copy and not real. To me it lumps VW38 with the red and blue prototypes commissioned by Volkswagen not long ago, THOSE are re-creations !!

Seriously! from the English dictionary (oxford)...

recreation: activity done for enjoyment when one is not working.

re-creation: to make something from the past exist or seem to exist again;
to create something again.

restoration: the process of restoring a building, work of art, etc to its original
condition.

No offense to all the hard work that would have gone into the translation of this book, and not to say that it wouldn't have been enjoyable, but "recreation" is not the correct word to use here.

Personally, I lean toward the word "resurrection" as there is something a little miraculous about the whole saga, not least of which is that it survived in any, way, shape or form at all...

and this car is certainly NOT a fake.

Even the naysayers early on who said there was not much left of the original car would have no argument given the large number of parts that were found after the original car was found.

Thanks Axel, let's hope this will end the discussion. It would be much nicer if someone could 'resurrect' this topic with new info about the actual subject, car VW38/06 Wink

Not to prolong the discussion, and not to apply it to 006, but here is a good discussion on the definition, history and valuation of classic car recreations.

http://collectorcarmarket.com/content/articles/clones/collector_car_clones.html

I look forward eagerly to the English edition.

Great news on the english version of the book, i own the German version and i got halfway through translating it and made a word file on the copy but i never got time to finish it. I'l be buying the english copy when its avalible

This discussion on words? id agree with Resurrection as the main body of the car is very original so i see it as the car coming back to life.

It would be far more accurate and appropriate to define this project, as a reconstruction.

It is not a recreation given the authenticity of the base/foundation of this project, which was a found partial historical relic. The enormous degree of research and new replacement fabrication work required, to transform what was found, into a representation of what it once was, was an effort well beyond even the most extreme of restorations.

As there is also little to nothing to faithfully compare/contrast it to fully, nor completely reference from a full set of original documentation, there is a certain degree of professional level interpretation involved in order to bring it back as closely as possible to what it once was, but never exactly the same as it was. As most of these earliest cars were of considerable one-off type productions, there are likely a range of unknowns that still and will remain despite the herculean effort involved.

It is however, perhaps the highest achievement this hobby will ever reach, and it deserves its place in history as such, regardless of what is ever debated, or referred to as, as it was an unusually massive undertaking that only a select few could accomplish.

Resurrecting is the right word to use.

I'm not so sure about the word "Splitty" Split Window seems more appropriate. I thing the word splitty is much more recent term to describe a split.

The fact that the car is a 'Split Window' is obvious, so it can be left out...

So, why not use The First Beetle as main title...?
For the subtitle, I would opt for: Resurrection of a 1938 Volkswagen

You are right. I will tell the publisher the proposals and we will see.
The book is not printed yet, so we have time to change the words.

I like belgianboxer's suggestions. They sound more appropriate for the tone and standard set by the book, a tone that conveys a sense of a work of art and dedication and love for the car.

Seems the book could use some appendices with all the parts (38 engine, etc) that have been found since the book was released. Looking forward to getting a copy

Rolling Eyes The company didn't, but the word itself was used well before any KdF-wagen was built...

Henry Ford’s Model T was often referred to as a People’s Car and it certainly predated the Kdf or the Volkswagen.
