James May has spewed absolute vitriol about the Volkswagen and its history in the past. I wouldn't let him within a kilometer of No. 6. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

its a tv show, for entertainment. honestly though I believe james would show the most respect for the cars history. and while he does often belittle the vw, he is a fan of engineering and history so I am sure will say many good things about the car |

Good point. Plus how seriously can you take the opinion of a man in woman's hair who wears second hand paisley shirts from a thrift store? _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

I don't think it's Top Gear. It's a stand-alone called "Cars of the People" |

Top Gear is extremely funny oftentimes.
And James May is the one of them three who will drive the car most careful.
For that hair, well, I´d kill someone to have it. _________________ Master of my domain! |

I was involved in the theam and met James May and the crew for two days. They all were very nice and serous guys and loved the old Volkswagen very much. James drove 38/06 very carefully so that we got it back without any damages or scratches. I have never met a TV-Team who worked so professional like the "Top Gear"-Crew. What a shame that I couldn't see the documentary because BBC 2 is not in our Wolfsburg net. |

I half watched (and recorded) the programme last night. It was actually pretty good! Spent about 20min discussing the beetle, in a semi light hearted way with lots of archive footage and lots of clips of James May driving VW38/06, including several bits where there was a family of five in it! I'll bet the kids were well warned to keep their feet off the seats!
The programmes theme seemed to be cars or of totalitarian regimes, so it did dwell on KdF, Hitler and the Blitz quite a bit, as well as a very poor taste joke about communal showers
So, not perfect, but I'll look forward to watching it properly later today, I'd recommend it, if you can get it on BBC iPlayer, or the link above. _________________ 1978 marino yellow Bay Dormobile camper

Thanks for sharing the link to the video.
I have to say, it was pretty scary to see such a rare VW driving down the interstate with those cars passing by so quickly. I hope the owner was paid handsomely for letting them utilize the VW for the show. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Does the 43006 have a little bump on the front left side of the trunk lid? You can see it at about 4:30 in the video. Hope I`m wrong! |

It is always funny what people might to see and that their react is a discussion. I got the car for the filming, brought it to Rügen Island and was involved into the production. You can believe me, the car was handled very carful and sensitive by the team and I brought the car back without any dents or damages. James May production worked with a team of 15 people and all was done within 24 hours. All in the team loved the beetle and it was alway a little fight, who can drive 38/06 to another location.
A very funny situation was when James May asked me if it is allowed to drive the car with the faked pre-war numberplates in Germany. You can imagine that this is totaly forbidden but when I remember the BBC Production "Around the world in 80 trasures" where we lend the Typ 60, the modern numberplates destroyed the scene. So I replied to James, that we are in easten Germany close to nowheresland and that the chance to meet a Policecar is very small. So James drove with the "old" numberplates (the originals were left inside the car and the car had an insurance).
After one minute of driving, we had to stop at the red traffic light of a crossing road. And had a Police car from the left, from the right and from the front of us. What a luck, they didn't noticed the numberplates... |

A very nice documentary. It is a shame that while demonizing the Nazi regime the authors have again fallen into the trap of providing historically false information regarding the Deutsche Arbeitsfront using the KdF savers money to build the Volkswagen plant and stealing the KdF savers money. As we all know the plant was not funded from the KdF savers fund and the money was stolen by the Russians in 1945 from the DA Bank in Berlin. Makes you think what else is false in the documentary?? |
