Chris, you really should move that Kab away from below those huge rocks! You know they have earthquakes out there in California... don't ya?

I don't think that I've ever posted photos of a "in-progress" project I bought from someone in Quincy, IL back in 1993. I tucked it away for a future restoration, but back in '93 I started buying better condition Convertible parts and pieces and stashing them away in the basement for the resto. It is a 1957 U.S. spec Kabriolett that was apparently black with red seat upholstery. I'm not sure that when it comes to paint that I will stay with black or choose another 1957 color combination. Here are a couple of shots of it in the black primer, just as I bought it. These photographs were taken back in 1993 or '94 and recently scanned into digital.
My original paint '55 Deluxe Sunroof in in the background in this first shot.
It was all apart and the body work completed and it was in primer when I bought it. It came with it's nice condition original fenders also.
It came with the wrong convertible roof frame (but surprisingly the correct rear window metal frame, wood bow and glass came with it! Whew!). It came with a 1959-63-ish roof frame. So back in 1993 I bought an already restored and powder-coated correct frame assembly with correct latches and hardware from Chuck's Convertibles for it. Thankfully it came with its original front and back seats with decent upholstery, the interior rear view mirror assembly, and a nice Convertible engine decklid.
All or at least most of the removed parts and goodies were stored in lots of cardboard boxes, and have since been cataloged and live in my basement for the last 20 years.
At various show and swap meets over the past 20 years I have bought two more sets of doors, another set of rear window assemblies, and another roof frame assembly. I think I have 3 or 4 dash grab handles, NOS Euro bumpers with guards, a set of Chuck's roof chrome trim, an extra decklid, a couple more interior mirror assemblies and a ton of other stuff.
I recently bought new WW pan halves too.
After I finish up the restoration of my '59 Double-Cab, I may finally dive into this one after storing and shopping for it for so long...

Hey "AlteWagen", I lived in the S.F. Valley for 20 years, survived many earthquakes there, including the huge 1971 quake. We get small quakes here in Missouri too occasionally, and are way overdue for a massive one in the New Madrid fault line. I have a earthquake policy here too.
Looking forward to seeing you again at Kelley Park again soon Chris. I think the wife is actually coming this time too. I love hanging out with everyone at Mark's place, and at Dr. Pete's on Saturday. I'm glad you'll be coming up! Since I live in Missouri, I'll be the one overdosing on "In 'n Outers" all weekend.

Speaking of Oval windshield logos, this logo is on an original windshield glass that I have put away for an Oval Kabriolett. What the hell do I have here? Era? Type of glass? Do you think this has that tempered circle in front of the drivers field of vision?
The actual windshield is all padded and boxed in storage, but that photo above of the post-it note shows a line-by-line illustration of what the logo looks like on the glass.
Thanks!

im looking into buying a 55 early vert but it seems to me the numbers dont match can someone help me decipher all the numbers please, the chassis although not clear it stamped 1-0822275 but it almost looks like 1-6822275
now the owner has a birth certificate for the number 1-0822275 that works out to be late jan 55 but the birth certificate says march 55 a little confusing.
now on the front apron tag it says 1-082275 which seems to match the birth certificate but the other number getting me confused is the number stamped in the apron which is supposed to be the body # but none of the numbers in the chart in the VIN # section seem to match 15-21807 can some one help me out to clarify the all this info thanks. _________________ shipping extra, paypal ok at 4% added to parts.

Photo dated 1957. In the image is a September 1955 (1956 model year) Karmann convertible. Norma, the woman in the photo, was the second owner of the car. She owned the car from 1957 until February of 2014, when it was sold to an enthusiast. The car still retains the original interior and engine.

The car is a clone of Rick Spohn's 1956 Karmann. White, with navy door panels and white/navy seats. More pictures of the current condition will be posted shortly, and no, the car is not in my garage at the moment.
Thanks for the kind words on the 1951. I'm thrilled with the progress.

I have some wiring harness questions for my 56 vert, I hope it's the correct thread for that stuff.
Somebody fitted a new quality harness a long time ago, and I'm pretty sure it wasn't done correctly.
1. right now I have only one bundle of wire running throught the heater channel from the front to the rear. Inside, there is the wiring for the engine and the 2 large hot + wires which (supposly) go to the starter. Now I have 2 smaller bundles for the semaphores, one for each side. Are those supposed to go through the heater channel as well?
2. Where are the wires going to the dome light? I have the 2 wires on the harness from the front (bundled with semaphore wires) but I can't figure out where are the wires from the dome light. I hope they are not missing, but have to know were they should be to check.
3. Where should the 2 large plus wires from the front go? On the starter? If it is the case, where should they run from the exit of the heater channel under the rear seat to the starter?
Any advice will be appreciated |

I've been reading a bit on this thread and a few of my questions are answered.
1. all harness should go through the heater channel. The left side semaphore harness then runs from right to left along the rear seat support. This is currently like this on my car.
So now I still need to find out about the 2 last points, about the dome light and starter wires. |
