1954 to 1980 , no standards. NHTSA mandated the new VIN here, in 1981
warning web vin decodes only work 100% (99.9%) on modern
17 digit VINS, different in usa from European std.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vehicle_Identification_Number
There are no web decoders that can do them all. Pre 81. not even close.

The factory manuals cover Vin decodes for all cars.
and is the best source pre 81.
VW has its own codes in this era.

its not really VIN (in the modern sense) (not making argument.)
but a Chassis number , eg 118xxxxxx (the 8 is year of mfg, not model) 1968
note how that coding does not conform the WMI rules , today,
a key reason for on line decoder to fail.

try reading op guide for your car, this is covered on page 3
click technical click owners manual.

I have a question. Under my trunk lid there is a number right next to where the trunk latches. Its held by rivets. It doesn't match any other number in the car. Its not the little silver plate that tells where it was made and has Vin. That one matches. I can't upload photos for some reason. Just wondering of anyone knows what this number means. Looks like it was painted over by po

My vin matches on door, dash, front silver plate and under seat. Not stock engine. But there is one extra number, right next to hole where trunk latches. I'd take a pic if I could upload. I don't think its a a vin. Too short. I'm slammed.at my restaurant right now. When get a chance, I will go out and see what is again and post it.

some one says , its the factory build date code. work week, day , #built.

ww/dow/seq#
work week/day o week 1-5(m-f) and build sequence number.

there is no magic to upload
only the size limits !
this is true on all websites on earth, Limits.
you take a picture
you send it to a computer (android is a computer too)
re-size it to 1024x768 (maintain aspect ratio, just set 1024 to largest size)
now up load it
gallery +add photos.

browse to photo
pick category 58 bug & up.
upload it.

that is one why
you an also send it anywhere on earth and link to it. (the cloud)
"photobuckes, cloud drivers, web drive, web files,etc......."

in the tech lib above, open that. see owners manual
the see page 3
see that picture of the bottom frunk latch
see that tag of aluminum riveted down?
6 fields in said tag below volkwagenwerks Germany.
see them>?
no just 1 line. 6.
1st is TYPE
last is weight. in KG.
seems its not this tag but one not shown in the op guide

ever seen this>?
above>?

O my god. Still can get it to up load. All I can say is the 041 number is directly above the The silver tag with the vin and where it was made and stuff. The silver tag lays on vertical part and other tag lays directly above it on horizontal part right next to the hole where the trunk latch goes. I thought it may have been paint tag but can't find anything matching it. I don't know. I give up on trying to upload photos

It's a date of manufacture tag, tells you what date it was made. See this post for more.

date codes are complex too in the real world
in 60s we used the date codes in many ways
Julian, anti-julian days,. work weeks and at Philips we had a 10 month calendar. (seems vw uses same as the electronics mfg t then.

Quote:
The 373 means it was built the 37th week of the year, on the 3rd workday (Wednesday). 5095 represents the body number for that day (or week? it seems high either way unless it includes other non-Beetle models).

this method was common in the 60s with telecoms.

041 -811 is what?

work week 4 , janurary
xx1 is monday. 1s day of work week.
811 is build sequence # that is the 811th car made this week? (day?)

On that same tag is smaller number 69, written sideways which by the thread above refers to the paint code, but the link in that thread used to match that to the paint code no longer exists. I can't decipher it. Any idea what 69 is, besides the obvious of course?
