First, I will say that I placed and paid for my Westfalia's birth certificate on February 25 and received it June 9. Considerably longer than I have had to wait for the ones I have ordered in the past.
I have a curious result on my certificate. My Bus is a 1986 GL that is painted Savanna Beige. Like every other Savanna Beige Bus I have ever seen, it has the tan interior, but the certificate indicates that the interior should be "Grey / Red." Could this just be a mistake on their part? A grey / red interior in a Savanna Beige Bus is definitely an odious match, in my opinion and I have never seen this color interior on any Bus! Are there any other Savanna Beige Bus drivers out there who has received this information on their certificate?
My options are listed as:
D1, D82 VW Vanagon GL with Westfalia interior
P27 Westfalia special equipment for VW Vanagon
M 027 Compliance with US West Coast emissions regulations
M 998 Two electrical rear view mirrors
Perhaps the D1, D82 indicates the equipment that would be standard for a weekender and the P27 is indicated for the pop top? |

We have bought three of these things for our vans/trucks. Unfortunately, especially considering the cost, they make mistakes.
I don't know if it's because the worker was lazy/unqualified or they have a messy system.
A couple of the mistakes on ours were really obvious, others not so.
Have you looked at the main thread on this topic?

As you read the later posts you can get a feel for the declining quality.
I still think they're worth having if you have an unusual VW. Not so much if your VW is run of the mill. _________________ Currently:

P27 = Westfalia full-camper
D-level codes are internal factory production codes that relate to specific trim levels (in this case, a camper conversion).

It's a shame to hear that; the certificates are neat factory/historical memorabilia to have. I got one for my Cabriolet back in '07 (when they were far cheaper) and it was 98% accurate (was missing a few M-codes that are listed on the build sheet, and they called it a "Golf Cabriolet GL"... Golf Cabriolet is fine, but it's a USA model that never got the "GL" type of moniker). _________________ ~Kamz

So where do you look for this M-Plate? I got as far as the seat and the swivel base but I don't see how the pedestal comes out to access the underside. There is an aux battery there: does removing that give me enough room? _________________ Currently -> Frida: 87 Tizian Red (mostly) Vanagon GL Westfalia w/ 2.0L ABA conversion

Anyone know for sure what these codes are?
Sadly, the paper sticker under the dash on the drivers side is long gone!
Here is a photo of the original delivery papers and of the metal plate under the drivers seat.........

How do you get under there? Does the top of the pedestal come off in some clever way? _________________ Currently -> Frida: 87 Tizian Red (mostly) Vanagon GL Westfalia w/ 2.0L ABA conversion

I was able to decode most of my van's M-codes at the "type 2 M-Plate decoder" (thanks Teamworld tour for posting link). I learned my van came originally with a Webasto heater, which was a revelation. But 3 came up as "unknown M-codes":
P27 (full camper, I think)
343 (spare wheel under front end, I think)
and D31.
Anyone know what "D31"is? Thanks! |

I found my M-code sticker below the fuse box on my '84.
I think I properly decoded my plate at VW-Mplate.com and using the list of codes provided, I figured the "027" is for the California Emissions and the "796" is for the Air Conditioner. "002" decodes as 5-speed, I assume it is including reverse gear, since I actually have a 4-speed. "018" is padded steering wheel.
I have some "D" codes and a three-digit code that I have no idea.
D41
D82
D86
090
Saw someone mention that the D codes could be factory codes, so probably won't find out what those mean, but curious about the three digit code (090)...?? _________________ 1984 VW Vanagon Westfalia 1.9L Water-cooled (aka "Osmo") |

Hi all,
Does anyone have the secret decoder link to translate the m-codes. I tried the brickworks link and it didn't go where I wanted it to.
I was looking at my very faded tag trying to see the paint code, I had to gently pull it off and backlight it with an led work light to make out as much as I could
It was no help on the paint it simply displayed ---- it is a very rare color that I've never seen on another doka except for advertising brochures.
But here's the codes I'd like to know
GQX
HPD
051
210
430
675
758
998
Thanks,

^Those codes are all listed & deciphered back on page 1, post 2.
However, since the Brickwerks link no longer works, I'll replace it with the just-posted vwt3.com link.

D codes are, yes, sales/production codes related to your specific model. _________________ ~Kamz

Well, let's see if this information helps or confuses the "weekender" confusion.
I recently purchased a 1986 Vanagon.
Partial production date of 5/86 and a production date of 7/86.
Serial number is WV2XB0252GH112***
Westfalia "Pop Top"
3 person rear seat, becomes a bed
Rear cushion over engine cover
1 rear facing jump seat behind the driver
No swiveling front seats
Storage cabinet in left rear 1/4 panel
110 volt outlet with exterior connection plug.
Odd plug by passenger seat, I presume for the removable refrigerator?
Fluorescent light over table
3 wall mounted cup holders
2 Wolfsburg Emblems one on each side in front of each front door
It came with the original books from the dealer. It was sold new by a Massachusetts dealer to a Connecticut resident. Owner 1
It ended up at a VW dealer in Cape May NJ and was purchased in February 1991........ Owner 2. They sold it to me yesterday.
I am owner 3 |
Wow, I just bought a Wolfsburg just today. Do you have any pics or stories of your restoration? |
