I don't really understand, why was your choice of veneer looks so decidedly different in the grain from original and why is the stain so light? Is it your artistic version of a westfalia cabinet or...? |

There is no artistic in here.
If you read the thread you will understand that the veneer I used is the same as the original veneer which is Limba.
The difference being in the fact that the only limba available on the market is figured and gives this reflection when pictured with flash.
About the color, the main reason why it looks lighter is because the veneer I used is new so overtime it will tend to tarnish.
I hope this answers your question.

So why when photographed do the inside of the cabinet doors look correct in comparison to the areas with the new veneer? |

That is what I said, this is because the new veneer is figured. If you look closer you will see that it is the same wood.
Here is a picture I took.
Above, original stained veneer,
Below, non-stained veneer.
Do you see any difference ?

I respect how much work is going into this, but the flamey-ness of the wood doesn't look authentic to me. |

If I have had found the exact same veneer cut as what westfalia used for their cabinet, you can expect that I would have used the same.
That is the usual problem on when being forced to restore stuff 50 years later, you never find 100% the same things. |
Great work. Regardless of originality, it looks close enough and the quality is fantastic. Good to know there is an option out there for all those early westys without cabinets to work with. |

A bunch of whiners on your thread lately grailoc
I think the contrast between the old and new on the edges looks great and adds an extra dimension to the look of the cabinets.
You've done an excellent job. Without reading the whole thread, who was your supplier for the veneer?
Again absolutely beautiful work. _________________ I build complete Westy Style camping interiors check them out here > www.rjcampers.com

Phenomenal work!
Even if there was someone here on this forum that saw a westy 50 years ago new delivered from Westfalia and they were able to say for a 100% that it was not quite perfect I don't think it matters much now does it?
50 years of dirt, smoke, light (uv included), kids soda grimy germ infested hands on many a camping trip any veneer will darken or change. Come and see this kit in 50 years and see how it looks.
Again great detailed work most people on this site wouldn't even attempt I am impressed! _________________ April 3rd 62 standard mgr/pw

I too think it's incredible work.
Lets not forget the temperature changes and humidity over the course of those same 50 years. It'll be a diiferent color 5 years from now, much less 50. |

The wood does age overtime, but the a lot of the darkening you see is in the finish. It also has a tendency to darken or "amber" with age.
While I dig how you, Grailoc have chosen to finish your cabinets, if one wanted to, they could speed up the aging process by applying amber shellac as a sealer coat. This would give the wood an immediate amber tone that would darken over time.
Which leads me to another thought. How were the original cabinets finished? Shellac, Laquer, Poly?
Also what did you use to finish your cabinets Grailoc? _________________ I build complete Westy Style camping interiors check them out here > www.rjcampers.com
