It may or may not need replacing. But I'd definitely remove and clean it, and check the balls and races for signs of wear. If none are found, pack it with a good moly EP grease, a new seal, and you should be good to go.
With the arm out, check your inner diagonal arm bushings. Rubbers are NLA, just urethane. If you use the latter, get some good urethane grease and use it generously. If you don't, they'll eventually squeak and drive you nuts. |

That's just what's left of the seal that needs to be replaced, although if you're in there I would replace the ball bearing and all the lube in there since you're in there anyways |
Yup, same here. You can use a punch to knock the old bearings out (after removing the snap ring), clean the garbage out, install new bearings and reinstall the snap ring and install a new seal. Then finish putting it back together. This was what I did along side the road on a car I bought 10 years ago. I also suggested this above (previous page).
Remember, these cars were designed to be serviced, and removing, cleaning and packing the bearings were something that's supposed to happen every 30,000 miles (but doesn't). Most will just run them until they fail, then replace the bearings, add grease, and continue to drive. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

You guys are fantastic!
This is a breath of fresh air for me. I've driven this squareback about a total of 3 miles since the day I bought it a few months ago.
I didnt like the shiny metal showing in between the bearing carrier and the axle shaft, so I tore her down, and posted up a nasty greasy picture.
I cleaned up what I was looking at, and took a few more pictures to give you guys a better idea of what I'm working with.
Looking forward to installing new bearings and grease! |

Getting a new windshield and seal installed today. Added new sunvisors and clips, and hope to get a new passenger side mirror installed this evening. Hoping the new seal takes care of the leak coming in through the front passenger area, but regardless, the window was super hazy in the corners and had multiple cracks and such. Excited! |

Cleaned the car, and drove it to a place that I like very much, near my home.
It is called the Solutre Rock, a prehistoric site, and the vines behind the car produce the delicious pouilly-fuisse white wine.
When fall comes around the vines will turn yellow - orange - red, it will be magic !

After 2 show weekends in a row, I now finally get to address little gremlins today like horn short, alignment and vent window adjustments, whew!! I have to say...it was so cool to get the reactions when I took my beloved little "German chick" out to a predominantly American-Muscle car show and shook up the crowd a bit.

thought I had dirty idle jet on the left carb, it was clear, on reassembling and testing realized the carb is dripping fuel when running, and with engine stopped it dumps gas like it's no ones business!! pretty sure my brand new oil is loving that
time to check float, needle and seat....it's not even funny anymore how many times I've had to take this carbs apart |
well, after changing gaskets, needle and seat and checking everything it still dripped gas...then I changed the fuel pump and it worked flawlessly!
turns out the rebuild kit I used for the fuel pump had too strong of a spring and it's basically worthless |

I finally had my "Gertrude" Registered and insured, so of course she needed to have the Oxidation knocked off, and is quite the little time capsule.
Even has the original POLYESTER tires..
now I have to knock out a big cleanup job on the interior.. _________________ --Jason--

Yes! and it has factory Disc Brakes, Fuel Injection and Automatic. The three things old VW's aren't known for.. one owner (73K) before the guy I bought it from, and he just cut off the heat exchangers and sold it to me..
A lot of components are in great condition, so anyone needing photos of anything of "how it was suppose to look" originally let me know!

I know it doesnt look like there is that big of a difference, but I was able to magic eraser the snot out of the dash and gauges.
It got dark so quickly so sadly the pics aren't as clearly noticeable as possible.
Anyone know the best method for cleaning the white headliner without tearing it up? I know I will have to be so careful as it feels strong, but it is over 45 years old...

Got home last night to see a little puddle of gas under the front of the 71...fuel pump had developed a leak. So, today I put on an Airtex E2000 and all new fuel lines and clamps under the tank. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |
