What did you use to match the red? It *looks* like you resprayed it in the pics.

Excellent work. Looks like you've got the patience and the skills to get this done from my house!

Thanks! I used a rustoleum paint (sunrise red) on the body. It's not a great match but I ended painting so much of the inside that it didn't matter. Also, the paint job on my car is terrible so I wasn't really focused on paint matching as it is super pointless considering how much work needs to be done on it.

This weekend I pulled our notch out of a snow bank and into the shop for a week of needed repairs.

up on the hoist I'm amazed that it had the original axle boots
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Cleaned the transaxle from many years of the boots leaking.
I replaced the mounts and rear seal and used the 1/2" tap to thread the starter bushing for removal. Installed new split axle boots. I'll wait until the engine is in before tighten the small clamp.
I searched and found the clue where the shift coupling is. The book we have said the coupling was under the rear seat( like the type 1).
Snapped the 6v starter solenoid + terminal off.

A little rust repair before the engine goes in.
cheers
Hank

thanks jjjason & kris! interior pretty much complete and both door panels are pretty straight... it needs new pan sections and maybe a rocker, other than that get it running, driving and stopping, clean it up a bit and drive it. I think my son wants to add some rims and possibly lower it slightly. it will be nice to have my son around to help wrench on it when he's not in school and doing whatever 22yrs old do when not living at home. Laughing Shocked

Solved a hard starting problem on the Type 34. It was a combination of things. 6V slow cranking wasn't allowing the fuel pump to get enough gas to the carb to fill the float bowl. Had a weak coil too. Back on the road today.

So are you going to swap out the currently wrong tailgate out for a year correct unit?
It looks like a good project to start with. I bet my son would have liked to start with one that complete.
Have fun.

After tiring of fighting my gas pedal z-bar and accelerator cable, I ordered and installed the X-Celerator repair kit here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1333757

It fit my automatic 1969 Squareback perfectly without any modifications and now I have a much nicer feel (and peace of mind) when I press the gas pedal.

I also attempted to fix my leaky transmission. New pan gasket, and replaced the o-ring on the kick down switch connector. I used Permatex 81180 ATV gasket maker to seal the gasket after spending some time hammering down the bolt holes and using a grinder with a shrinking disc. Hoping that does it this time.

To all the amazing people I have met over the last few years, thank you. I sold my 71 SB today. I'm sad but it was time. It went to a good home in Arizona. I hope to continue attending events. What a great group of people you are who keep these cars on the road. Thanks again.
