IN the past few weeks, got the engine running again. 1679cc, stock valve home-ported DP heads, C25 cam, 8:1 CR. Current layout has rebuilt 32PDSIT Solexes with snug throttle shafts, disabled choke, and stock jetting. All factory ball sockets in the carb linkage replaced with heim joints purchased from McMaster Supply. Older, decent quality 009 distrib.
Problem in past was the 40DCNF carbs ran well but car had poor fuel economy. I switched to the Solexes, but the last time the engine ran and I could drive the car it had a bad misfire above part-throttle. It sat this way for about 3 yrs.
First step was replacing all fuel hoses in the engine compartment. Each one had developed a leak! Verified TDC by removing #1 spark plug, rotating engine until the fan timing markings for TDC lined up with the engine case split. Observed the TDC piston position through the spark plug hole using an inspection mirror and flashlight. I pulled out the distributor to verify the distrib. drive gear position, which was correct with the slot angled, and the larger portion of the offset pointing to the rear of the car. Installed the distrib, rotating the body until the timing slot on the edge lined up with the rotor which was pointing to approx. "10:00" position. Then wired the spark plug cables starting with #1 above the rotor.
Engine started up quickly, and ran smoothly when revved. Got out the timing strobe light and saw the idle was at about 15-20 BTDC- way too early. Problem was the 009's condenser was tight against the fan housing so I could not rotate to retard the timing. Turned off engine, turned it to the confirmed TDC position, lifted up the distrib body and rotated it 1/4 turn CCW so that the condenser cleared the fan housing. Oriented the plug cables 1/4 sequence so that #1 was again above the rotor. Thanks to a recent comment from Max Welton on this topic. Started up engine, then set timing to 30 degrees BTDC per the fan timing marks and the strobe light with engine revving at about 2500rpm.
Fuel pressure per in-line test gauge was at 2.5 to 2.8psi.
Next was to get the carb linkage in order. Used the factory procedure from theSamba tech section http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/t3dualcarbtuning/index.php
It was already close, but the right linkage rod heim joint needed to be rotated about 2 turns so that it did not "lead" the left carb linkage rod. After setting both carbs to "best lean" and measuring airflow with a Uni-Syn, the engine idled nicely for a good 20 minutes. Phew. Success.
On my brief test of the car in the driveway, the brake pedal felt unusually firm, not progressive. After parking the car and turning off the engine, I heard a "squirt" sound when I pressed the pedal . Then looked at the driveway and saw a trail of liquid spots and a small puddle where I stopped and shifted from reverse to first. Damn- brake line leak . Turns out the main brake line along the trans tunnel rusted through near the pedals, and a second leak spot at the junction of the left rear hard line to the LR brake hose. Worse than this, I was shocked to see full rust-through on the floor pan under the pedals, and a tennis-ball rot hole in the bottom center of the pan spine near the frame "T". Could look right up to the inside "ceiling" of the tunnel. This will require significant cutting and welding to remedy. Hmm- not hard to guess the source- car is parked outdoors with just a good quality car cover, so it is exposed to rain. Rust holes at top of front fender rear edge must've let water into the interior which collected on the floor during my 3 years of storage. Air vents in cowl are covered with magnetic sheets so they were not a source of the water ingress.
All 4 bumper mounts on the body are also rotten and need to be replaced. Luckily CIP1 and ISP West sell Tabco repair panels for those areas.
Plan is to get 4 new tires (the front two 185/65 now on it are 23 yrs old and dry rotting), new brake lines and hoses. Get it driveable, get its NY state safety inspection, then take it to a friend who has good welding equipment at his VW/Audi repair shop to weld-patch the pans at half-day intervals, driving home after each session.
Here's the car from 2006 when it was a bit more solid.

Glad you got some of your problems sorted.
Never use a car cover on a vehicle which is parked outdoors long-term. The car will still get wet, but the cover will not let the moisture escape, greatly accelerating the rust process. BTDT with my 66 Bug. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

Yup, I learned that lesson years ago...never use a car cover outdoors. In my case, it stripped the paint off in places, requiring a complete repaint. Since then, the cars just sit outside in the weather.
Glad to hear you've got it running again Roland. I'm sure you're happy about that part.
We're still rebuilding parts of Rob's car. Getting close to laying some epoxy primer to seal the bare metal, now that most of the welding is done in the rear 1/3rd of the car. I've also been doing a Steve, and playing around on my mini bike. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Today I brought my Notch home. I bought it in 1985 when I was a kid. It has been in my Dad's garage ever since. I will post pictures soon. |

Played around with different offsets and tire sizes until I found the perfect ride quality and stance for my 63!

Removed, dissasembled, cleaned, lubed and re-installed the speedo to eliminate the horrid screaming noise. Sooo much better now and i can maybe avoid those pesky speeding tickets.. Or not.
