Before the glorious Type 181 magazine from The Pacific Northwest Thing Association there was The Thing-Type 181 Registry Magazine:
Back Issues Reprinting Fall 1991 - May 1994
Riverside, CA.

I recently dug this up from my collection and am starting to read it again after all these years. Cool

Just a little bit of 181 devotee history. Orange 181

I think this went under shortly after I got my 181 in the mid 90s.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Does this exist electronically or shall I cut and scan this item and post on the Samba?
Anyone have any idea or comment about this?
Lots of goodies in this half inch think Back Issues Reprinting.

i got a bunch of those. when grandpa was the owner of my thing, he kept a suit case full of all the publications, technical articles, pages ,etc from the 90's.
i'll dig them out and see if i can scan them in later this week.

UPDATE: i just opened up that suitcase. i forgot how much stuff was in there. alot!. it may take me several weeks to get around to scanning all this stuff, but id like to make it available to my fellow thing owners.

once scanned let us know and I'd be more then happy to buy a CD-Rom with the PDFs or such.

of course an internet available source wouldn't be bad either.
but Scans on CD would suffice for me.

I am sure that Everett would host it all.

I uploaded 10 meg PDF doc for my scan of Roger Nang's 73 owner's manual. He put it in the manual section.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/thing.php

Scanning each issue and saving as a PDF would be great.

IF you need help in the scanning, I plan to be a BLTNVW on Thursday.

I can't wait to see the scans. I have never seen that article before and always enjoy seeing new "old" VW Thing stuff.

I wonder if Ol' Bob Miller is still around and driving Things? Anyone know or still in touch with him? That was his gig if I'm not mistaken.

There were some really good clubs back in the 90's that made some really good magazines. Is there still a registry?
I have a lot of the old magazines that I started looking at yesterday while going through boxes of stuff from our move.

Around 1995 Dave Campbell took over the registry. At that time he was living in Sacramento. We had a few get-to's. Most memorable, Lake Topaz and in 2004 Lost Wages, Nv. Dave moved to Shelton, Wa. somewhere 2002-3, and after the Nevada fling (I think) he kinda burned out, do to lack of support. He had a good news letter, and at that time every Thinger I knew subscribed to it.
In 2008 I subscribed to the predecessor, Type 181 Magazine.
www.TYPE181MAGAZINE.COM. Got 1 DVD and that was it.
I may be able to contact Dave to see if he has any back issues we could copy. I will be in Olympia over Thanksgiving and could shoot over to Shelton.

Appears that that domain is now defunct.

Rumor had it that Dave Campell would appear ay a recent show in Yakima, but he never did show up. Did manage to hookup with some of his cruise buddies. It was my understanding that the magazine was turned over to yet another couple. Met them at yet a different event Several copies were produced but then faded out. Shelton is only 50 miles away me.

The link to subscribe to the magazine can be found here http://www.type181registry.com/ but don't think anybody is still home.

Back when David was running the Type 181 registry (1993 -2003) I was a lifetime subscriber to his newsletter. At some point he sent me a CD that contains the archives Vol 1-10 (ten years) Along with my huge electronic VW reference library that includes the ever popular RoMTOC Thing Data CD, wiring diagrams for all VWs, Iltis, Unimog, Kubelwagen All the german tech manuals and more I also have the archived newsletters.

if only I had seen this a few weeks ago. I recently leased a high speed/industrial document scanner that could knock this out in about 10 minutes. Unfortunately, it has to go back this Friday.

I think we did 350k pages in a little under 2 weeks, all with OCR. I would love to own this toy, but it cost more than my current car.
