I am tearing my front end apart because most of the components are original and worn on my 1969 convertible.
The steering was mega sloppy to I'm redoing all the tie rods, ball joints, and of course the front brake rotors are under spec so they are going, too. Calipers are original ATEs and are good.
The shocker was I went to check the fluid level on the steering box and the top of it was loose! As in sliding around, 1/16 gap...how that happens is beyond me, but I figure it's got no oil in it, probably tons of dirt and explains the slop so it's going.
CIP1 sells two boxes, a Chinese one for $90 and a TRW one for $200. My gut says buy they TRW one, but I wonder if anyone has any experience with the Chinese one. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

I'd say go with your gut. Although there's an good thread somewhere on TheSamba that decries TRW steering boxes and gives a detailed photo essay on rebuilding the one that came with, several years ago I opted to replace the loosey goosey original in my '71 and have had no issues since. YMMV |

TRW! If you don't have the time and patience to rebuild your original.
As crocteau said, there is a pretty good and informative thread on rebuilding a steering box (Beetle forums?) _________________ '74 Zambezi green Ghia vert, autostick, 101k

It's in the Type 3 section:

Buy a new TRW and sent it off to have it rebuilt correctly. You can also ask the rebuilder to make one for you. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

Read that thread, thanks for the link.
Made me take a second look at my box. I had my wife move the steering wheel and looks like it is responsive so I think I will bolt it up, add oil and see what happens. If it's sloppy or leaks once I get the front end back together I'll rebuild it myself.
You guys saved me $200! _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!
