What's the car behind the Ford truck changing to the middle lane to get behind the Pontiac and in front of the bug? Thought at first a mini, but appears too large a being about 1959 too early - a Morris, an Austin? Anybody?

Sure looks like it. and I stand corrected about the year given the 62ish Chevy front and center. |

10 Freeway in Los Angeles (Santa Monica Freeway) with a white 62? Chevy Impala looking to be the newest car on the road and 3 easily seen VW's in the rain.
What gets me is what a difference today in vehicle years. Back then, it maybe 1962? But it looks as tho 90% of the cars are from the mid 1950's. 5 to 7 year span to 62. Today's congested roadway seems jammed with 90% new cars and 10 % older stuff. Back then I guess not everyone took a huge loan or spent all their money on a new car like today. |

Sorry 2weel, that's the 101 South coming out of the Cahuenga Pass into Hollywood. Melrose is north of and runs parallel to the 10, so no exit. |

Just to be clear, I'm referring to the lanes in the right of the photo. The busy lanes are northbound getting ready to go up the pass. Apologies for the confusion. |

Why I noticed this is beyond me- but all 3 bugs are driving in the passenger side tire trough- I can never do that with my old, small cars (I gotta be seen). Older cars had to last longer then- they predated crumple zones- and they weren't all bought on credit.
I like the ratio of headlight use too- pretty high compared to today. The only folks with lights on in the rain have DRLs and the rest drive like they have no next of kin. _________________

Jon Schmid,
Yep you are right. Melrose should have been the key indicator. I moved away from the South Bay some 30 years ago but did a lot of work still down there. My goof! The steep on and off ramps and the hillside buildings conforming to the slope of the grade also are a dead giveaway. Too busy looking at the vehicles when I should have looked a little closer to the surroundings.
Good Catch! |

the car is a STANDARD 10 from the days before they merged with triumph to become STANDARD -TRIUMPH , later the STANDARD was dropped and it was just TRIUMPH.
how do i know all this ? because my first ever car aged about 14 was a 1955 STANDARD 10.
i'll dig out a pic and post it later.
oh, and my father's first car was a station wagon version, it was called the STANDARD 10 COMPANION.
curiously, a quick google turns up this photo also featuring a VW beetle........

At the risk of running this topic into the ground I am including my post from the Reader's Rides forum.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=6899811&highlight=#6899811
There is a link on the last line of my post to a map showing the spot, marked A, where the pic of the 101 Fwy in the rain was taken. (That pic is also shown four posts before mine.) If you drag the orange person icon (located just above the sliding zoom scale) to the spot on the map where the A is then you will see the most recent street level view (in this case from January 2011). Then you can pull the street view in any direction of the compass you want. Use the white arrows on street view to move a short distance. Use your mouse to click on a spot to move a longer distance. Lastly, click on the + below the compass in the top left corner to enlarge the view.
Using those steps is how I was able to find the location of the same sign in the 1962 pic showing the three exits -- Western, Melrose, and Normandie. |

Any mention of rain and Southern California reminds me of the 1972 song by Albert Hammond.

I don't know--found this on another site --it was linked to a "what is this" but that link is now empty.
For me tho--I think I know where I'll start looking.

Here is what a restored 1952 Simca 8 Sport looks like.
Ford of France made a car that looked remarkably like that Simca.
