Extended car warranty

How many folks have purchased a new car in the last 5 years and also purchase the extended warranty from the dealer?

I just purchased a new F150 and they put a lot of pressure on the buyer to get the extended warranty. I chose not to get it.

It depends on the car and the warranty and who is underwriting it.

Example: my mom and dad's 2019 Audi A6 "S-line"....which is a kind of light version of the S6. But it still is a rolling computer literally.....has 335hp, 8 speed all wheel drive, active suspension and steering with 335/35-21 wheels.....and every single option in the book from the 19 speaker Bang Olufsen sound system to shit you cannot imagine needing.

I won't get into the how and why they bought it.....but it came with a five year or 100k warranty (whichever comes first)....they bought the extended warranty through Audi.

Now we are approaching the five years with 13k miles on it. Not a single problem. But.....we recently found out that when we got a tire damaged and had to replace one ($600+ each).....that no one but the dealer can actually align the car without throwing codes. The active suspension and steering....requires being plugged in at the dealer and the car interacts during alignment.

This is NOT a car you should own without a warranty. If it were even an A4 Variant it would be different. There are so many unique parts and systems on this car that once you start getting age or miles on this thing.....it can and will cost thousands every time it goes in.

We are pushing mom to trade it in on something this summer.

You really need to ask yourself how long you plan to keep a new car....both years or miles...and look into what could go wrong and what it costs.

If you do like I do or my brother does....his F150 has close to 300k miles on it and so does my 2012 Golf....but we can fix virtually anything on these vehicles. I could not say the same for all of the systems in say.....a 2022 or later Golf or F150 at high miles.

I just had a buddy with his 2011 Jetta sport wagon with 67k miles.....have the dreaded ABS module failure code. It's somewhat rare but not rare enough. That's an $1800+ part and you still need to pay the dealer to program and update the firmware. Ray

It's not really about the odds and economics of failure. We KNOW those favor the house.

It depends on what the impact to you of a failure is. Are budgets and inconvenience of a random failure/down-time/expense more of a problem? Then it's worthwhile.

It's not whether you or the dealer makes money, it's about what it "costs" you (time and money and logistics) should it fail.

So circumstances probably dictate it more then reliability or price.

we get those lovely calls, l give them to my son, they don't seem to want to sell him a warranty.

there's nothing in a new car for me.

Manufacturer extended warranties might be OK.

Fuck aftermarket warranties, most of them aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on.


I’ve seen ones that don’t honor “internally lubricated parts”, that includes the whole damned engine & transmission. I’ve had five or six companies tell me that they can’t warranty an engine unless I can do an oil pressure test… on engines with seized cams or rods hanging out of the block. I even had one tell me that they couldn’t warranty a transmission if I couldn’t tell them what the original point of failure was, half the fucking internals of the transmission were scattered across the highway. Two more declined repairs due to “preexisting conditions”.


In addition to them trying to weasel out of everything they can, read the fine print, many of them don’t pay for tear down to diagnose, will also set unrealistic limits on labor rates ($60/hr), anything above which is owed by the policy holder, many also do not pay for the taxes, or fluids. I’ve even had some tell me where to buy the engine/transmission/parts & expect to pay what it cost me to buy it from their source, and still warranty parts & labor. I told them if I’m not making profit on the parts, they can buy it themselves, ship it to me & I’ll install it for …., but I am not going to warranty a goddamned thing. I got to do several of those jobs multiple times at their expense.


If these ass clowns weren’t making stupid money from everyone, you wouldn’t be getting daily calls about “your warranty is about to expire”.

You don't buy an extended warranty, they add it to the loan and you pay interest on it. The dealer gets his cut right away!

The F-150 come standard with a 3-year/36,000-mile Ford factory warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.

The standard coverage seems sufficient.
Keep meticulous service records in case you have to make a claim.
It probably won't hurt to bite the bullet and take the truck to the selling dealership for all it's service until the warranty period is exhausted.
I've seen situations where some service's and repairs were done out of network. The claims process is more difficult.
