|
|
Hi,
I'm new to the VW aircooled scene and have recently bought a rail that needs a fair bit of work.
The rail currently has a pair of 5.60 X 15 standard tyres on the front on beetle wheels (4 x 130 steels) and a pair of 215SR15 MT's on aftermarket steels (wider than standard).
I'm happy with the rears but want to change to an MT set on the front.
Can anyone suggest a suitable size for the fronts? |

keeps the transmission in one piece. side bite from a more square tire is hard on transmission/drivetrain when you need it to spin and keep you going rather than making traction. _________________ 65 Baja - Class 5 Unlimited Race Car

Hey, nice find.
About the rounded tired for the rear...is the diameter measured at the crown of the tire? For example, the MT Baja Pro, is it 33 inches in diameter at the center of the tread, or is it at the sides? _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

Carlisle tires - available at many shops via American Tire Distributors (83 distribution centers servicing all or parts of 37 states) and I imagine some farm stores ,etc distribute them as well. About half the price of brand name off road tires.

I am Brand New here and was wondering if anyone has a report on these tires? Thank You |
I realize this is an old post but I figured I'd update. I've ran the tru-power (29x12.5x15 on 8" wide wheel - tubeless 20psi) for about 5 weekends in the woods and they work great. The hardcore folks like to shave them down to make them more pliable and reduce weight but they work fine stock for what I'm doing. I also now have had the 3-rib front tires (5x15 on stock beetle wheel with tubes 20psi) for about 3 weekends and they work well too. (Note I've no front brakes) three in our group run the same rear tires and two run the front. I realize I should go lower on the pressure (especially the rear) but I'm leery of breaking a bead. I've already come back from a weekend with bark stuck between the tire and wheel. _________________ Nick |

This is the way my rail was when I bought it. Living in the NE there is no sand for me to play in, but there are trails and fields. I am trying to find some decent A/T tires to mount on another set of wheels I have to make a nice woods buggy. The problem is I bought the wheels on Ebay and they are 14's. I am having a problem finding 14" A/T tires. Does anyone have any suggestions for me? It is a 1600 dual carb engine. |

Here's my 69 project that's almost done. Running 30x9.5-15's in back with 215/75-15's out front. Stock height.

The Mickey Thompson 33in Baja pro says it can be mounted on rims 4-8in wide. What effect do varying wheel widths have on the tire profile and hight?
If you were to mount this tire on a 4in wide rim, how would the shape and size of the tire be different than if it were on an 8in rim, for example? _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

very nice! you will have to swap those rears often (from rim to rim not just swap sides...) as in right rear now will be left rear with white wall not showing so you get "even" wear OR swap to an IRS rear |
Going on 18 months without rotation and they are wearing nice. My biggest complaint with the tires is they throw rocks horribly. |

You guys think I could get away going through Pismo, nothing too gnarly, with a set of these Sand Tire Unlimited Desert Trak 1200 series?
But using them on this

This question is interesting. My guess would be handling and floatation.
I know that cars with stretched wheels with small tires handle okay on the road, so I've heard. But it does change the shape of the wheel, I wonder what effects that would be off the road.

Here are a few pictures of some class 9 cars with Mickey Thompson Baja Pro tires. The rear 15x9.00 tires are nearly identical to the old Gates XT Sand Command tires. The 15x7.00 front tires are somewhat similar to the old Gates XT series of tires. The tread pattern is right, but the lugs on the sidewalls are different.

I have 15" cragars on the back of my rail. I had 275/60/15 and just put wrangler 31"/50/15 on it. My tires were barely slated before but now are VERY noticeably slanted inwards towards the bottom. Is there something wrong? Tires wrong size? Adjust my suspension in the back? Normal? I'm very new to volkswagon and rails. Please and advice would help. |

It's fairly normal, not good but normal especially if you have a swing axle
Probably just that you put on the taller tires its more noticeable . If it is an IRS rear end there are some adjustment you can make. If its a swing axle it's a little harder. |

Do you mean to say that your tires look like \ / from the back?
If so, that is very easy to change on the swing axles. Much easier to correct than an IRS. Simply take some of the preload out of the suspension and they will sit like | | with out much fuss. Just make sure your toe in is still good once you lower your ride a bit.
Look up reindexing torsion bars. You will get dozens of good how to tips and tricks. If you have a couple hours in the afternoon free, you can get it done with some strong chain, a floor jack, and basic hand tools everybody should own _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

I'm trying to build a class 11 style car. I'm not planning on using it for jumping or anything of that sort just for hitting some mud holes and light trails. This is my daily driver so I will for sure be using it on the road. I know it's a super beetle and I don't want to hear all the comments on lifting a super beetle. I want to know what size tires will fit best under a super beetle with out cutting the fenders? What type of tires do y'all recommend for mud and road use? _________________ 71 super
