Haha! Three boxes... I put everything in one GIGANTIC home-made box and then had to tear it apart and re-box everything at the UPS store cause they didn't like my cardboard craftsmanship Just don't think you're done. There's still plenty of stuff that could use attention while the engine's out. Clean up the engine compartment, check the seals (last pic I saw, the front of the engine seal was toast), make a removable rear apron!! get your wiring all straightened out and loom'd up nice.... just cause the go is gone, don't mean you get to sit on your laurels till it comes back, haha!!
and are you getting the case tapped for full flow? |
Haha, no, I meant I'm really unable to do anything more! I'm returning to school this Friday or Saturday, and so I won't have any access to the car till late November.
I am not doing that. I talked to the guy at the company, and he said I wouldn't need that. _________________ 1973 Super Beetle

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand the engine is in! I even got it to run! Pictures will come eventually. I think my carb isn't working right--so I may end up purchasing a new one. Beetlebaum is running incredibly hot right now, with the timing WAAAAY advanced. I'll tinker with this current carb and will probably get a new one soon...but most importantly: Beetlebaum is back in action! _________________ 1973 Super Beetle

Don't run it too long or too hard with the timing over advanced, especially not with the warmer weather.
What is the carburetor doing? What carb is it? Also do you still need that thermostat, rod, and bracket? I have a nearly NOS setup I can sell you if you still need it.
Good to see the car back on the road! _________________ My 1970 Beetle Thread

The carb seems to be doing its thing...I'm slowly dialing it all in, but it seems off somehow. Almost like there's a vacuum leak somewhere, especially when I try to rev it up. Also, the car runs EXTREMELY HOT, no matter how long or short I run it for. It's very odd.
Perhaps my flaps have shut, even though I believe I have them wired open? Which way are their little levers (which can be felt on the firewall side of the fan shroud and have the flat bar connected to them) supposed to be facing? Mine are pulled toward the driver's side. _________________ 1973 Super Beetle

Sheesh, I haven't been on in a while! But, the engine is giving me the same trouble it's given me for years and years now. So, I finally did some troubleshooting, and I found some fairly massive vacuum leaks (including one where the vacuum advance fails to hold its vacuum--does this mean it's time to replace it?). So, I'm finally making some progress! |
Quick and dirty test. Sick on the advance hose a little and plug the end with your tongue. Does the rotor slowly advance back to its starting positioner? If so, can is leaking. Yes, time to replace it! |

I tested it with the vacuum test tool yesterday, and it certainly did not hold its vacuum. So, I'm in the market for a new distributor! _________________ 1973 Super Beetle

Hi guys! I finally got a chance to work on ol' Beetlebaum today. Gosh, I sure haven't gotten to work on him enough...
But enough of that: I have, with the help of a neighbor who owned a "Beetle-Bug" (as he calls 'em), gotten Beetlebaum running again. He won't idle, so I'm looking for a new vacuum canister or new distributor. Then, once we've established the distributor works, the carb gets all the attention. Unfortunately, I'm returning to school soon, so I have to rush to get Beetlebaum going again! _________________ 1973 Super Beetle

Thanks! I'm at yet another standstill--I'm back at college. Hopefully, I can get my engine sorted out over Christmas break, the next extended time I'll be home. Gosh, it has been forever since I've gotten to drive ol' Beetlebaum. _________________ 1973 Super Beetle

Consider it somewhat of a blessing you don't have your car at school with you...lol. My Beetle is already eating up my limited college student budget. I think I may have overdone it...between rent payments, having a cat and dog, a boyfriend, two Volkswagens, and a part-time job...it's a bit stressful sometimes! You'll get Beetlebaum going again soon...Thanksgiving break isn't that far off after all _________________ My '72 Super |

Hello, everybody! So, I know it's been forever since I last posted. Well, I recently got a new carb for ol' Beetlebaum and STILL can't get him to run. So, we're towing him to the Bug Out tomorrow morning, and hopefully the fellow Dubbers there will help me get him going!
Here he is in the Wal-Mart parking lot down here in Virginia Beach shortly after getting a fresh tank of gas in preparation for tomorrow.
Look for many more pictures here after tomorrow's show!
And if you go to the show, please come visit me and Beetlebaum! He's very recognizable, that's for sure. _________________ 1973 Super Beetle

Well, everybody, Beetlebaum had a rough day today.
We had a tornado down here in Virginia Beach, and a tree limb fell on his roof. He got a good wallop, but it isn't deadly. I can easily hammer it back into shape, but I'm not very happy about it! It could have been much worse; my mother's truck, which was next to Beetlebaum, took most of the falling branch and may be totaled. Thank goodness, though, that Beetlebaum only has this small bit of damage! No broken glass, lenses, or anything; just a set of massive dents.
In related news, I have been super lame about fixing him up because I got an exhausting job. I have no free time anymore, so I'm going to be even lamer and take him to the local shop to get fixed and running.
Hopefully soon, I'll remember to post the pictures from the Bug Out! That was a great show; Beetlebaum sure looked nice! _________________ 1973 Super Beetle

You can be thankful for the dome-shaped roof. Any other roof would have been crushed flat. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.
