I wonder if that could be flattened and remain on the roof before taking to the road, or if it had to be completely disassembled. Anyone know its history? |

I asked my wife to look at this photo and tell me what her thoughts might be on the resemblance of the woman stepping out the door of the trailer/camper. Curious as to what any of you might think, and if it matches our matching answers. _________________ nothing |

I know I have seen that pic before on TheSamba, not that I am complaining since who is going to sift through 258 pages to see if the same pic has already been posted? I see elsewhere that the woman has been identified as actress Julie Newmar. She looks enough like the 5'11" Julie to be her, but I'm not sure.
Those hubcaps give the impression that the Ghia is new. Can any of you experts identify the year of the Ghia? |
Yes, it is Julie Newmar
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/album_page.php?pic_id=1239866
A Google search of this image hs this description::
Julie Newmar - 'Mackenna's Gold' - 1969
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064615/
I have not seen this movie but my immediate thought it doesn't sound like it would have a Ghia in it, maybe the photo description was not a movie still but just her on the set.
I also found another description on the same photo:
Julie Newmar leaning up against her Volkswagen Karmann Ghia outside Fox Studio’s back lot, c. 1960s
A Ghia person would need to chime in on the year. |
Early door with popouts would make it a early 60's model, 60 to 64 maybe? |
The first Cat Woman... She prefer the KG... not the Batmobil... _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538182 |

I bought this picture on Ebay a couple of months ago. It's a Kodachrome transparency dated Sept 1960. The license plate looks to be Californian and the location San Francisco.
If you know the specific location in San Francisco, let's hear it. |
That's a great picture, but that's not California. I would put it on the other side of the country, New York. In 1960 California would have had a yellow base, with black letters. Looking at the buildings in the back round, and the black base, yellow lettered plates, I'm thinking New York. _________________ WANTED: Henry Veale Santa Rosa plate frames

But if you Google "California State License Plates 1960" you get images of both types: black with yellow letters, and yellow with black letters.
Although that could be a NY street, I don't see anything in the picture that has any of the peculiarities of a NY streetscape, and I grew up in NYC. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

Googling for images is a bit inexact, you get quite a mix. Googling the web for "1960 CA license plate" you find sites like this: http://www.oldplateguy.com/1956-1962-CA-License-Plates-For-Sale/
'56-'62 yellow plate with black lettering...'63-'72 gives you black plates with yellow lettering. |
^^^^My point, yellow and black Ca plates through 1962, while in NY in 1960 they were running black and yellows, similar to our 63-72 Ca plates.

WOW
Thanks ateneo, for posting all the interesting pictures of Stockholm ca 1960 a couple of weeks ago!
The capitol of Sweden has been much altered during the last 50 years and many of the streets and buildings (as well as the cars) pictured in your postings are now long gone ...
I'd really love to see more of these pictures ... any chance you could hint where you did find them?
