Fairly common school prank for little light cars. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I wonder if that black Merc that is backing out is the same car that puffed out the cloud of blue smoke? _________________ nothing |

The Valiant was quite common over here in the 60's as taxi and police cars.
Record shows the Swedish police bought 152 new 1966 Valiants...
Brand new (red plate) 66 Valiant in Västerås back in November 1965
Police Valiants test driving on the right side of the road late in the summer of 1967. Sweden shifted to right side road traffic in September that year.
Other old Swedish police cars:
One of 22 Porsche 911/911T bought by Swedish police 1966-73.
Ford Zephyr (very rare) and VW Bus (rather common) |

There must be some kind of interesting connection between Chrysler and the Swedish market to explain why the Police would buy 152 of them when they could just as easily (and more cheaply?) buy Volvos. Maybe Chrysler thought they could break into the European market with their American product line (as opposed to their Simca products) if they could prove their cars in the harsh Swedish winters. _________________ Central Jersey VW Society

I do think most of the police cars actually were Volvos and German Opels…
Story is Chrysler Corp. sold CKD-vehicles to the Swedish ANA-company (Autobile factory of Nyköping). In 1960 ANA was bought by SAAB and thus became involved in selling brands like Plymouth, Dodge, Chrysler, Standard and Simca including the tractor brand Massey-Ferguson on the Swedish market.
Since the Swedish SAAB-car manufacturer did not offer suitable sedan models for the Police themselves, they competed with Volvo simply by offering Valiants which were part of their business. |
