Are Swan Neck side mirrors attached to the end of the chrome trim, or on the fender?

I looked it up on the classifieds and saw it at the trim, but I have seen some side mirrors attached to the fender itself and heard it was a swan neck.
Am I mistaken?

The typical Albert swan neck mirror (made for vw) attaches to the quarter panel through the first hole where the moulding mounts. You have to cut the end of the moulding off to make them fit. Also need to tighten the crap out of them because most people with hair growing out of their ears think they are made to grab and lean on.....

The Hagus mirrors mount on the front quarter panels just over the rubber for the hood.
