Yeah, I forgot about the 90° deal too. With Thing doors, you can't just lift them right off. First, you need to pop off the retaining catch and then open them just past 90° before lifting them off the hinges. Same thing with putting them back on. |
I didn't realize you had to... guess i just did it... _________________ Without love in the dream it will never come true |

| Hello, I planning to fabricate some of these door covers for my Thing. How do they get attached to the door (in the bottom)? Could someone be so kind to upload some picts? It'll be very helpful and I'll appreciate it very much. Thanks. |

The ones I've seen have tabs inside the cover plate that slide inside of the lower lip of the door pocket. The ones I saw were homemade by a guy at KTE many years ago. I didn't think to take any pics. _________________ JohnD

Looks like The Thing Shop isn't offering them anymore. You might want to give them a ring to see if you can order one anyway and to check the price - they're good quality.
Here's some detail pics of mine.

| Two years ago I made molds and prototypes for these exact pocket doors and Jack Gruen made several sets. Check Thing parts under classifieds. Solomom Grundy has the prototypes, and I have some carbon fiber samples left. |

Why not just lock the trunk with a small padlock?
That's what the little hole on the trunk release is for.
Good luck, Mondshine |

I like to keep stuff in the glove box (even, sometimes, gloves!) and appreciate it not walking away. Before I had the door, someone would rummage through the glove box every couple of months - I've lost loose change, sunglasses and other small stuff. After installing the door, even though I never modified the body to correctly latch the door (it looks locked but anyone can just open it) I haven't lost anything out of it, and I've never seen evidence of it being rummaged through. I often even keep my GPS in there, something I'd never do if it didn't have a door. _________________ VW-181 shirts and stickers.

| Twenty years ago when I had my first Thing and was driving it to school every day, I got an old 50CAL ammunition can from the surplus store. Two bolts through he floor pan next to the driver’s seat and a Master lock and everything was safe and sound all day long. Plus, when it was raining or snowing, it kept everything dry. Not sure I would do it today, but it was simple and worked. |
