Hello,

I was doing some research regarding the Kubelwagens on the net, and on the Wikipedia webpage, ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Volkswagen_K%C3%BCbelwagen ) i have found the following mention:

Type 331: Prototype fitted for power by a "native fuel system" (acetylene gas) engine (also listed as Type 231)

Can someone provide any more informations regarding the acetylene conversion? - Results of the prototype tests, and informations regarding the technical aspects of the conversion Smile

Pictures would be nice...

Thanks.

"native fuel system" usually refered to the Wood Gas generator system, I'm pretty sure the translation to "acetylene gas" is incorrect, there were also cars equipped with compressed natural gas systems with a gas bottle compartment mounted but Acetylene ≠ "Native Fuel"

plenty of info on Wood Gas systems here and elsewhere

This decklid was on German ebay several years ago. The comments said it was from a Kubel modified to run on bottle gas (whatever that might have been), and the hole was to fit the gas cylinder.

I have no idea if that's correct or not. I agree that you're probably asking about a Holzgas Generator.

If you are, you should have bought this off ebay. Just perfect for your wood-gas kubelwagen or beetle:

Same unit as this one:

No... i do not want to build a holz-gas kubel, but instead an acetylene powered VW Smile , as I am interested in alternative fuels Smile I know some people have tried it on other cars, with some degrees of succes.

Acetylene is a really nasty burning fuel though, isn't it? I know running a torch rich makes NASTY smoke.

Seems to me we've seen pics here of a car with tanks on the passenger side.
