Introduction and Identification Help!

Hey there everyone! Been a lurker for some time now as I learned all I could about dune buggies, and just recently I bought my first project! I'm very excited about it and plan to get alot done this summer, but I would like to know what kinda buggy it is. Any help identifying it would be very helpful!

I checked that buggy out on CL and even talked to the guy. I thought about just buying the body? He even said he would sell me the body Sat. if it didn't sell. It looks like a Manx clone to me. Good score for what he was asking! Did the pan come with a title? Is it reg'd as a vw or special construction?

Oh so you must have been the other guy he was talkin about, nice to meet you =) Gordon was a cool guy, very helpful. And yah very nice price, was able to talk him down some to. And as far as I know, its not registered.

Oh wow, I just put 2 an 2 together, I was just reading your post about the tilt hood, I was very impressed, I hope to maybe do something like that to my buggy.

Thanks, Gordon is a very cool guy. I was second guessing myself and thinking I would just buy it for the hood and dash. I wasn't sure if I was sticking with the hinged hood? If I get figured out maybe I can help out.

Its a manx clone that looks like the mold was splashed from an early floorpan Manx(65). It has the straight narrow ledge across the top of the rear seat. The only differences look to be the lack of the nose badge bump and an enlarged aircleaner cover that appears to have been been trimmed back.

Most direct manx clones produced by bigger manufacturers had changes made to the shape of the hood or fenders to distinguish them as different designs. That one is pretty much a generic manx clone, probably made in small numbers by an individual without a particular brand name.

That it doesn't have a brand name has nothing to do with the ultimate quality of the buggy. That is entirely dependent on the care and effort you put into it.

And thanks BL3Manx, I was just kinda curious about the brand name, not gunna effect the outcome of this buggy, and I have alot of plans for this lil blue buggy, I'll keep dropping in here with my progress and hopefully not too many questions.

Nope, Citrus Heights, Nor Cal. The guy who sold it, Gordon, was a great guy, very nice. Sorry you had a bad experience with the other buggy =(

Hmmmm... Maybe its not the same car then.... But the name of Gordon sounds familiar... And he did say at time he wanted to be rid of it because he was moving.........Anyway doesn't really matter...

I hardly got anything done this weekend =(

This is gunna be a very interesting project, I come from from a long line of business men in my family, I grew up in a house with one screwdriver, and that was the extent of our tools lol. Oh and tape, cant forget tape =P

So yah, any thread that you could point me towards that is in a sense "How to build a Dune Buggy for Dummies." more or less, cause I am so beyond lost its kinda sad.

I have a few buddies that could help me with this (They are actually mechanically aware) but they were busy this weekend.

Alright new question.

Whats the difference between a normal pan and a IRS pan?

Two main types of pans:

IRS (Independent rear suspension & swingaxle.

IRS pans come with ball joint front beams

Most (emphasize most) swingaxle come with link pin front beams.

You have a swingaxle. It needs to be shortened. You then need to attack the car by some sort of logical approach, which includes:

1. Pan (suspension, steering, bushings, brakes, etc
2. Drivetrain (engine, transmission, fuel system)
3. Body (patching holes, priming, painting)
4. Re-assembly (wiring, steering column, gauges, seats, seat belts, etc)
