I found these pictures in the gallery.
Pictures were oploaded by Rareair and the comment was:
Mario brought out his 1958 VW-based Kaiserslautern coupé coachbuild. Body is all Steel, so it wasn't some backyard job. First built in Kaiserslautern, Germany. It made it's way to Austria, then Holland and is now in California, USA.
It looks a bit like the Kaisernlautern coachbuild coupe that was in Budel (the Netherlands) a couple of years ago. But it looks different.
Is this the same car or did the students of the karrosseriesbauschule Kaiserlauteren build different cars? _________________ Dutch Karmann-Ghia and coachbuild lover.

This is exactly what it is: The students of Karosseriebaufachschule Kaiserslautern built quite a few cars, mainly on VW chassis. I am not sure if every year, but every two or three years they did. Some look really nice, like little Ferraris or Maseratis, others are rather ugly...
And there are still a few out there not known a lot, so keep your eyes open...

I finally found a better picture from the other Kaiserslautern build coachbuild coupe.
The car was present at VW euro in 2002 (and not in Budel)

Reminds me to post some more old pics of that thing from when it was primer red back in the early '90s at a Sacremento Bug-O-Rama, I'm wondering why almost 20 years later no one has put some new canvas on the sunroof !!! funny _________________ There is an idea of a Billmetric; some kind of abstraction. My apologies to the builder and owner of this car but it looks like the results of parking both a Studebaker and a low light Ghia in a dark garage with some soft music, candlelight and chilled wine, if you get my drift...you know, Bam Chicka Bam Bam! |

The rack was specially fabricated just for that car by Pedro Sainz. He makes very high quality racks and other accessories for Classic VWs. His web site is www.pedroracks.com
He had a large selection of his racks this weekend at The VW Classic.
I have a similar back rack from Pedro for my beautiful '65 Notchback (a 1500 Club car). But when I take it to a show with that rack on, all anyone wants to do is talk about the rack. They coud care less about the beautiful car that it is mounted to _________________ Rick Christensen

As far as I know the actual owner is from Austria and also belongs some other interesting cars like Hebs and Karmanns and a yellow-black Rometsch Lawerence. |

I once owned a coach built and called it the "Kaiserslautern Koupe" I sold in 1998 and shipped it to California. It was later sold and shipped to Europe. I was wondering as to it's current location and if it has been restored. I have many old photos and information I would like to provide to the current owner (if the current owner does not have the information). Below are a few photos of the original paint prior to stripping and primer. When I got the car it did not have an engine, I later stripped all the paint, filler, rust, installed a 36hp engine and the grey primer.

Hallo 2003nbc
Welcome to thesamba.
This is great. First old pictures of Oystein his Rometsch and now some old pictures of this special car of the Kaiserslautern karrosseriesbauschule. It is great to have you here and I am wondering what you have more in you old pictures gallery. Any picture of coachbuild cars are always welcome on this forum

If you do so, please post the link of the new topic also here, since I am not regularly reading at TheSamba (but follow a few interesting threads like this here).

Hi guys!
I remember seeing this car in the Coachbuilts and Cabriolets book years ago and then have seen it at a couple local events over the past 10 years ago or so. I have always been immensely intrigued by it. I have pestered Mario about it for many years and just recently he decided it was time. I had it posted for him for sale for a couple months as I didn't have the coin, but as luck would have it, I scraped it up and just bought the car last week. I am absolutely thrilled to have it and am diving head first into researching and restoring this car.
I have sent emails to the Kaiserslautern school to see if they have any record of it, but no response yet. I have been digging around on the car and the original color was an ivory. I've been carefully scraping off the thick layers of paint to see what is under it all. It really needs a media blast, but for now I will play.
Looking forward to the restoration and learning more about it. I will post up photos as the work progresses. Most of all here I want to thank Mario for letting it go. I know it was tough for him, it's a special car, but we both shared the love for it and he saw that. I will bring it back to glory, it's a car that deserves the full treatment. It will be a long road, but it's one I am happy to travel! _________________ Cheers!

Could have purchased this student coach built car, back in the 1990s. I believe it was a Texas high school project... I remember it was affordable, but really ugly is why I passed... based on a 1954 beetle... never regret not buying it.
Still have the original photograph, somewhere.
