I don't know if I have mentioned these parts that have also gone NLA before--

86 to 91 2.1 2wd Oil fill tubes are now adios.

You used to be able to buy just the plastic telescoping tube if you broke it.
Well about a year ago that went bye-bye, and if you needed a replacement telescoping tube , you had to buy the whole assembly--right down to the engine--metal tube and all.

Well, as of about a month ago, they are now NLA too.

Syncro oil fill tube assembiles are still available--

No more 2 wheel drive tubes through VW.

You might be able to locate a vendor with some still on the shelf.

Be real nice to your current--still together-- oil fill tubes---

Can we start a sticky list, keeping it simple without argument, with a list of parts that we know are NLA? Mightyart?

Well Samba, I was looking for better answers from a supplier of VW parts.. but today I found out that they no longer have the part in stock and are looking for more.

The part number is 251-201-147B and I got an E-Mail saying I got the last one on the shelf. I was hopeing they had more in stock.

This is one for the NLA list of obsoleted parts from VW...shame on them for ignoring the owners who want to keep their vehicles on the road.

I would be interesting to find out which parts were NLA in the USA and which were NLA worldwide. Since Vanagons were sold in South Africa for much longer than they were here, many parts may be available there that are NLA here.

How about a picture? I worked in the coin-op amusement industry and have several outlets for odd-ball parts.

Getting the car back from the local shop today for other issues, they mention the throttle switch is on its last legs and should be replaced soon.

Figures.

So, tencent and whip618, and anyone else considering a custom version, keep me posted. I think I'll need one soon!
All the more reason to find the nearest autoyard see if it holds any abandoned Vanagons...

Whip has the reman / updated stock throttle bodies ready to go, if your mechanic has determined that you need a whole throttle body assembly.

I think he mentioned he has some new TPS switches to bolt in.

Remember, the stock bodied throttle bodies are tested and true--usually good for a couple hundred thousand miles prior to needing a throttle switch, adjustment, or a total rebuild.

That's a pretty good track record considering it's a poorly designed, antique injection system component as metioned in a prior post, claiming that VW engineer's did a poor job in the R&D department in the development of the Vanagon throttle body.

I think they did a pretty good job seeing as they lasted for usually big miles, and 20 some years.

If you just need a switch, cam & clip, drop me a P-mail.

PM me here if you'd like on the cost of such and once you think you'll have them in. I emailed the local shop asking if they have a line on them too, but suspect they won't if this NLA is as widespread as it seems. Will see. Let me know a price and date and may well take you up on it (I should confirm with them it's just the switch that's needed too and not the body. I'll take a look myself and see if I see any obvious flaws in the body).
Thanks!

Boy--How in the heck did I forget this one?

About 2-3 months ago Richy had problems with the brakes on his Syncro.

He called me and asked me what I thought, and we talked about what was going on.

One of us suggested that it might be his proportioning valve is queefed out.

I called VW--NUPE.
All gone, never to be had again.

I got one for him from out west, outa a late model Van.
The corrosion on the valve was at a minimum.

I am almost positive I posted an an announcement on this while back--

Anyway--Here's another part to add to the list ( for those of you that forgot like I did.)
Vanagon hydraulic Brake proportioning valve.
Which you can't possibly run without---

And yep--Richy changed the valve & he had decent brakes again.

Here's another one Mom's & Dad's, Boy's & Girl's.

If you have an automatic Vangon, the tin metal cover over the trans governer is now NLA.

If you've got a rusted up cover, better slop it up with POR-15, Wax Oyl,---or something, to keep it from rusting all the way through & leaking.

I have the last two new cover's in existance.
When they're gone--that's it for them--

As of right now, the cover hold down bail & o-ring are still available.

I still THINK THANK and THUNK its a good idea to have a sticky on parts being obsoleted by VW ....that would give us a chance to stock up on a part from our go to vendor B4 they go Bye Bye.

Thankx for the heads up Terry, keep us informed when you can.

For us air cooled guys I know that the cold start valve and fuel pressure regulator and the thermo time switch and especially the full throttle switch are getting harder to find for a decent price.

Get them whilst thee can

Here's something pretty interesting, and I saw this this weekend.

I know a guy--I call him Halftrack Paul, he's 30 some years old, and collects, rebuilds, and manufacture's WW II Army halftracks--and you guys think I'm off the wall--this boy is one step over the line--

Anyway, I went up there to lok at a Verneer tree shredder, and he's showing me a Military issue White flat head 6 distributor cap from the halftrack--that is NLA.

It's a round, flat steel cap with
7 steel threaded nipples silver soldered around the raised shoulder of the cap--
The cap is about 4" in diameter, and maybe an inch tall.
Looks very much like the Vanagon governer cover--only bigger.

He had two punches made--to stamp the part number & Delco Remy trademark on it.
If your into handy work--it's gonna be tough to tell from the original.

"OK Paul--whats the deal with these things?"

He sez--
"Well, they've been NLA for 20 some years, nobody's making them, and I've been selling them for $300.00 a pop."

How Much?

"If ya got a half tracked vehicle that isn't running because it's got a bad cap, and it's in one piece or restored, what's it worth?"

End of conversation I said--

Pretty adventerous guy and does nice work.
He's making the armor plating for the windsheild & doors of the halftack's too--I guess this stuff was tossed or lost over the years and he's manufacturing them.

I wonder why he wanted me to get him a Skill type steel saw like the one I have awhile back--

Neat stuff.

The problem with making an NLA list is--you don't know or have a clue the stuff is going NLA till you go and try and buy the parts.

I've sold a bunch of them in the last 6-8 months, and nobody at the parts counter know's if they are going to go NLA either, till ya go and order more.

Then the boom gets lowered.

Be a tough job --being that there are a gazzillion items of interest in any given vehicle.

You would think in this day of the internet that VW and other OEM manufacturers would put out a warning that they were going to quick making a part, to give people a chance to stock up. I lucked out when they quit with the T4 thermostat, I had gone to my usual foreign FLAPS to get a thermostat and they said they couldn't get one anymore. I then rushed right to the dealer and found that there were two at a dealer in Florida. They both quickly became mine for a very good price, $15 each IIRC. I have been this same route several times on other parts and have a good stock of parts that I suspect will be NLA soon as well.

I know what I'm going to stuff in my pockets when I go to Pick-n pull!

Really, though how much longer can you expect VW to support a car thats been out of production for over 17 years...

I got this URL from Rock Auto, on parts for an '84 that they are closing out:

http://tinyurl.com/mapjw9

That's not a bad price for the water pump.

Best!

Those are some excellent close out prices!

Are 84 CV joints the same as 86-91?
