I've had my square a little over a year now I'm finally getting to do some work on it. I'll use this as a build thread.
The paint overall is pretty good, but it was VERY oxidized and dull. The rear hatch has some scratches and a couple dents that were from a PO.
Pretty faded

So I decided to give it a buff/polish/wax and see how she cleans up. I did this in my garage (in hindsight I wouldn't recommend buffing a car in a garage). The one thing I was concerned about was my roof rack. From the look of some of the washers it hasn't been removed for a very long time, if ever.
half the roof buffed.
Not a spec of rust on any of the holes in the roof. Just had to peel off a bunch of silicone. That's buffing compound in the holes.
ooooo pretty....

The thin parts of the paint are now very very thin. I am wondering if the hood was a replacement hood at one point. Everywhere else when the paint is thin the primer looks white under the orange. Only on the hood is the primer green.
I replaced all of the screws and washers with stainless steel. on the slats I used 10 1 inch stainless steel #10 flat head phillips screws. On the posts I used 8 1 1/2 inch stainless steel #10 pan head phillips and 10 stainless steel washers.

I need some help on this...
I was going to put the rear Volkswagen script on the back and it doesn't fit.
This is what I bought from Cip1 and it's not even close. The mounting holes make it look like the script should be a good 2 inches longer.

no problem. It took significantly longer than I thought it would. I was planning on 3 hours and it was more like 9 (this was my first time buffing). _________________ 71 Squareback

I went through the same thing when looking for the right emblem. I'll get you a part number tomorrow. _________________ Type 3 Fasty |

Yeah, CIP sold you a bug emblem, and you need a t-3 part. I don't have the number available, but ISP should have the correct part.
The car looks good. The green primer shouldn't be there, and sounds like a respray. The green is probably factory paint though, so it'll hold up good, depending on how it was prepped. Nice job. Oh yeah, I have a rack just like that out back, just nothing to put it on. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I'll get home on Monday. I'll check the extra hatches I have sitting in the back yard. If I have a good emblem, it's yours. _________________ Brain Trust member #13

The rear emblem was enlarged and angled (formerly horizontal) sometime during the 71 model year.
That looks like the horizontal emblem. _________________ 65 & 71 Squarebacks. |

over the past couple weeks it's been idling pretty poorly and it felt like it was misfiring. It got progressivly worse to the point to where it would backfire and would nearly (and sometimes would) die when I stop. I'm getting ready to head to vegas in a week and have a lot to do in not much time so I took it to a local shop who gave it a tune up and it has been running great since Tuesday. The idle seems a bit low to me but nothing major.
So I'm driving home tonight - about 30 mph - and the engine just flat out dies. I try to start it and the gauges get power, I hear the fuel pump turn on then off, turn to crank it... absolutely no noise at all. I checked the fuses (at midnight by the light of another vehicle) and they look fine but I'll check them in the AM. Fortunately I have tomorrow off... where should I start? _________________ 71 Squareback

Check the distributor/ignition system first. Make sure all your plug wires are connected. Check the points, cap and rotor, and the wires to and from the coil. Sounds like something simple (hopefully)... _________________

Dirty trigger points? It's only 1 bolt to pull the distributor straight up and clean/re-install without changing the timing. _________________ http://s169.photobucket.com/albums/u236/mr_bojangles500/

Check the connections for the starting/ charging system, paying particular attention to the hot lines supplied by the battery under the rear seat at the regulator, ECU supply relay, etc. _________________ Give A Pal a Hand!

I went over the connections and I didn't find anything loose. So I guess I'll pull the distributor and check the points. _________________ 71 Squareback
