George Young, guitarist with the Easybeats and co-writer of their hit, “Friday On My Mind” (#16-1967), died Sunday (October 22) at the age of 70. George was the brother of Angus and Malcolm Young of AC/DC and produced the group’s early albums such as “Let There Be Rock” and “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap”. George also wrote the John Paul Young tune, “Love Is In The Air” (#7-1977).

Chuck Blackwell dead at 77. Chuck was a session drummer for Leon Russell and is closely associated with a genre of music known as the Tulsa Sound which was made famous by Russell,Eric Clapton,JJ Cale and others. He also worked with Joe Cocker, Taj Mahal, Little Richard, The Everly Brothers among others and picked up three gold records along the way.

After graduating high school he along with Leon Russell and David Gates moved to L.A. to be part of the Wrecking Crew. Later he toured with the Everly Brothers and in 1970 with Joe Cocker on the Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour.

He also appeared on Shindig an ABC variety show. He also appears as session drummer for The Rolling Stones in the documentary "Rock and Roll Circus"
He retired in the 70s moved back to Tulsa and opened a stained glass business.

Another rock legend gone, although more obscure influential by any measure.

Richard Gordon, Apollo 12 astronaut.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_F._Gordon_Jr.

I know today we take space for granted, either in real life as in the last Apollo and Shuttle missions, to the sci-fi, oh-so-easy world of Star Trek.

But think for a minute just what balls it took back in those early days to go into space. You had no backup, no rescue, no proof that the shit worked. You were the beta tester, and when it crashed, you crashed.

He started on Gemini in the mid-'60s.

Then on Apollo12, this guy circled the moon, a quarter of a million miles away, and all by his lonesome as the pair in the lander headed to the surface, and he orbited the dark side of the moon, so to speak, out of both visual and radio contact of any human being.

And we all know what happened on the next Apollo mission.

Big ones, man!

Irv Refkin, one of the last spies who operated behind German lines in WWII:

Quote:
Irv Refkin, an impromptu but daring spy who served the United States and Britain as a saboteur, assassin and courier behind enemy lines in Europe during World War II, died on Thursday at his home in San Diego. He was 96.

. . . Mr. Refkin, a scrappy 5-foot-6 Wisconsin native, was said to have smuggled explosives to the French Resistance in Paris, infiltrated Nazi Germany to kill specific targets integral to the Nazi war machine, and sabotaged train tracks to slow the deployment of German tanks to Normandy before the Allied invasion on D-Day.

On his clandestine missions inside Germany, he would disguise himself in a Wehrmacht corporal’s uniform.

“No one,” he explained, “has ever noticed a corporal.”

He also carried out assignments in Italy, the Soviet Union and South Africa.
