have one sitting in the garage, mismatched heads one is flycut the other is not. One side has a solid rocker with swivel feet the other side has stock rocker.

Everything is stamped with the GEX logo so I know it came this way from them.

I know a guy that had a type IV Gex motor he drove across the country and back.

I know a lady that got a GEX motor that was bad out of the crate. They ripped he off and she lost a lot of money on that deal......

Hey, nothing wrong with harbor frieght tools, as long as you follow one very simple rule.

Never buy anything that if it fails, it can kill you. Hahahaha.

Same here we installed a gex engine in a guys 79 vert no worries. I've had 3 customers on the other hand with less than 3 hours on them and they no good. There "reman" heads are nothing more than oversized paper weights.

Not at all. If, perchance, you had a large stack of GEX warranty paperwork, it'd be just the thing.

I bought a set of reman 40 horse heads back in 98 or 99. Had them in their boxes till 07. When it was time to rebuild the motor my mechanic took one look at the box and asked if I still had my old heads. Thank god I did. WTF happened to these guys?? Weren't they THE place to go or am I reading to many magazine articles.

in 1989 i purchased the 1835cc big valve dual port long block motor for $845 shipped to my door. it took 4 months to get the motor. it arrived just like the ad. in the GEX box strapped to the crate w/chrome valve covers. i ran that motor with a single 44 weber for about 3yrs without issues, not even an oil leak. i was involved in an accident in which a lady rear-ended my bug thus cracking the engine block. after splitting the case i found a stock german crank 8 doweled std/std, std dual relief case, genuine 041 heads, stock german flywheel, stock rebuilt rods, cima 92mm pistons, 110 grind cam(unknown make)with rivited cam gear and a melling 30mm pump. the compression ratio was 7.5:1. motor was good up to about 5000rpm. i had it rebuilt and later traded it to a friend who ran it for many years after. so i am going to say i got a motor when they actually did good work. i have seen and heard nothing but horror stories.

I was bored and searched GEX in the gallery. Those came up.... If I win the lottery or ever publish my yet-unwritten novel, I'll buy a few dozen engines for people on here and hire a big law firm to file a class action to put them out of business once and for all.

I got a type IV motor from another company that they claimed they rebuilt. Fast German Auto was the name. I ran that for about one season and then on the ride home from Litchfield I had a nasty tapping. Had it towed home and pulled the head and to find a valve sucked. I also found the GEX stamp on it. So I tear off both heads to check them out and sure enough they are both stamped GEX. The were mismatched, machined differently and only one actually looked like someone attempted to rebuild it. I found a nasty crack between the valves and most of the fins were broken off of it . Needless to say those heads were junked. I rebuilt the stock heads that came from the old motor I pulled.

I had a GEX core scrounger at the shop picking up every DP head I had on the yard. We loaded his van front to back to the ceiling. Not one good head in the bunch, but theyll weld them and sell them again.

I pulled my fan shroud this past weekend and found an ugly sticker. I will say I've had my Bug for 5 years and the engine runs well. It does explain a few things though.

Quote:
Our dedication to producing a PREMIUM engine has resulted in GEX becoming the largest Volkswagen production engine remanufacturer in North America. And, as the LEADER, GEX has set the standard for precision machining, professional assembly, and intensive quality control.

As you may know, not all rebuilt engines are created equal. As with everything, you get what you pay for. The California Bureau of Automotive Repair and similar agencies in other states maintain no standards for what constitutes a "rebuilt engine". It can be as little as a teardown, inspection and reassembly, with no machining and no new parts replaced if everything "looks O.K." The amount of new parts and machining in a rebuilt engine can vary by as much as several hundred dollars from one rebuilder to another. Let's face it, anybody can rebuild an engine cheaper, but the ultimate life of the engine may be reduced by as much as 75%.

I pulled out some random GEX literature from the pile of full documentation I have on my bus. Full on numbers matching Jersey Look action. Enjoy!
