Was it VW Trends or Hot VW that always had some hotties in its mag in the 80's / 90's ? It's no wonder I've got carpal tunnel, and still own the same VW... Embarassed

I have the complete GEX catalog from 2000. A guy I used to work with moonlighted at a local Autozone, he gave me the catalog and said they sold a bunch of GEX motors through Autozone. It's funny looking through this catalog and all of their propaganda about how great their stuff is, and knowing that the engines are shit.

there business model is never admit guilt

obviously from what someone else quoted they blame there mistakes on a bad motor, or on a lead footed driver. never them

but to hear of a motor that couldn't even survive a break in??? tha'ts horrible.

with that said, i know a guy that had a gex motor, he sold it with the car he owned, we put new pistons and cylinders on it and he ran the shit out of it, really really peppy car to boot, no endplay, nice and tight, quiet motor. to know a gex motor would survive his foot, would make me interested in buying one

but then to read the comments and threads on here i'm reminded why i build motors for myself

Matt,

I hope you're not planning of slapping them on questionable engines and passing them off as the real deal. That would be dishonest and mislead the buyer as to the quality of the engine.

But I don't see any of the overheat coins, an astute buyer would notice the warranty was void if that was missing from the sump Razz

I've gotta ask though Matt........., did someone give you those or did you actually dish out money for them?

I had a customer bring me a baywindow bus with a GEX engine which he had just had installed and couldn't get to run properly. It turned out to have no compression on the left side- the cylinder head was left loose as well as the rocker shaft!

That was my original plan. I was lured in by the thoughts of the millions of dollars I could make passing off sub-par engines as real-deal GEX. But then I realized that with the advent of thesamba.com, the world is just too small these days. With all the internet detectives out there, I'd quickly be found out that I was passing off engines with matching case halves as GEX. People just wouldn't stand for it and I'd ultimately be lynched. So, plans have changed and these stickers will only be going on engines I personally inspect and certify to have been built to the rigorous standards GEX had, has, and always will have.

My search for overheat coins starts today. Thanks for the tip, I would have totally forgotten. I absolutely paid for these. Money well spent. I also now own that box 73Sports posted above. The South Philadelphia GEX Museum and Memorial is slated to open Summer 2013.

So 1990 is the demarcation date?

Pre 1990 GEX is like pre 1965 (CBS) Fender guitar?

The current HotVWs issue has their ad. In one corner it says "1973-2010 37 YEARS OF EXCELLENCE". Either they are too lazy to update their ad or for the last two years they admit to no longer producing excellent engines.

You can call toll-free for their free catalog: 800-423-1869
Since we at Samba already hate their engines, if we all ask for their free catalog we will be saving some unsuspecting buyers from a bad experience by cutting down on the number of catalogs that otherwise would go to those dupes.
