Is it in good taste to rename a bus? We had a name for the new member of the family ,and just found out his original name from the original owner. I don't want to mess with any good chi this name may have had with this particular bus. Comments, or thoughts |

A rose by any other name is still a rose.
Oh...a personal name. Up to you. Which do you like better? Which do you think you would use more? Then again, it's your Bus so you get to pick whatever you want, the Bus ain't gunna know _________________ Toby http://www.aircoolednut.com/

shh eva may hear you! I don't know about honoring POs names. I know my bus has been named Eva since a few weeks after I got her. gotta get a feel for the thing before you name it. Nicknames can come later, I like to call her RB. The redonkabomb. long story, most of which I don't remeber. _________________ [email protected]

I see no problem naming it something different. A name deemed proper by the PO may not sound right to you. You and your Bus turn over a new leaf together when you take ownership, so a new name would definitely be in good taste if you ask me. _________________ Percy: '77 sage Westy, 2.0L FI (GD), 091 trans

And yes...I have to quickly correct everyone that rides with me in Percy that refers to him as a 'van'...most have caught on too.
ACNut had a good point too...make sure it's a name you would use. If it's a mouthful then it becomes a pain in the ass. When I saw mine for sale and was earning the money for it, some friends and I came up with "The SS George Carlin"...but that is far too elaborate for every day use. So after about a week of driving him, I walk out one day and go "you look like a Percy". That also happens to be the name for the character of the exact same color on Thomas the Tank Engine. _________________ Percy: '77 sage Westy, 2.0L FI (GD), 091 trans

my friend named mine the V-Wobbly so I had to keep the name. Just fit it perfect. _________________ 1975 campmobile

I normally get some special brownies from the neighborhood teens, sprnkle white dust from a fond relatives urn in a circle, outlined with evenly spaced candles then sit, legs crossed Indian style, exactly in the center, but facing East while tossing boiled/dried chicken bones high into the air then rename it the first word that comes to mind. Cancels bad Chi everytime.....lol _________________ David W - from Chesterfield, VA / Jefferson SD / Stephens City, VA in that order.

What is the value of a name? I wonder if you are less likely to let the oil run dry or burn it down in a bus fire if you've given it a name. We do often care for things we feel personal attachments to, and a name makes you think of the bus as something besides just another internal combustion driven pile of 30 year old steel and rust in your driveway.
I think a name might be a useful trick that has less to do with the bus than with your relationship to the machine.
When we asked our PO what the bus's name was, he was kind of dismissive, and acted like it was strange we would ask. He then admitted that his PO called it Lucy. His PO redid the full interior and gave her a nice, rebuilt engine. My PO (the non-naming type) crushed the pilot bearing while replacing the clutch, and had all the vacuum lines hooked up wrong.
When we adopted the bus, we decided that Lucy was a little too informal for a veteran of the road, so we now call her Lucille.
Pop psychology at its best. |
