agreed. good discussion.
just pointing out the fact that it's a "system"...each piece has a job to do.
If you change one thing, you gotta look at how that affects all the rest.
there is some "overkill" in the original design, but not much.

Start with the basics, making sure that each component is functioning as designed.

Okay. Here's the plan ....

1. Re-adjust the carb in the event what's happening is simply due to running too lean.

Test drive to work on Friday and over the weekend to the shop party - woo!

2. If the dipstick is still too hot - look at the main jet - ask myself - "Self, do I need a larger main jet?" If so, find larger main jet and install.

Test drive somewhere else.

3. If there's still a heat issue - sell another kidney, rob a bank, or print some money for a new dizzy.

Well! Minor mixture adjustment and there's improvement. Still having hesitation and it takes 2-3 tries to get her to start when she's cold. I'm beginning to really eyeball my 009. Granted, I haven't done another interstate run yet, but still.

Could this actually be a dizzy wearing out?

timing light should tell you. If the timing is not holding steady at any rpm, or advancing in an irratic manner when slowly bringing the revs up, it could be worn out or getting that way.
Check advance mechanism for sticking, loose or missing springs, clean and lubricate.

Are you getting a good, healthy squirt of fuel from accel pump nozzles just off-idle ? (check this with engine NOT running.....don't ask how I learned this)

It holds good and steady - seems to come up steady, but almost seems slow when dropping back to idle.

I haven't looked at the accel pump - I'll do that.

Current heartache. I was riding with the group on Saturday after leaving a nostalgic gasser race and was heading to another hang out. A member of the group had to pull over so the rest of us pulled into a gas station to wait. After about 20 minutes I tried to start her up and she wouldn't start so thinking the typical warm engine takes a few tries, I tried a couple more times. On the third try, the starter started dragging and smoking so she was towed to the powder shop. By a vintage International truck on a wood bed trailer which was awesome in and of itself. Smile

Pulled the starter this morning to find that it's full, and I mean FULL of oil. Here are the pics - The only real oil leak seems to be at the starter mount. Note that the flywheel is clean.

The plan, according to advice taken, is to clean the underside of the engine and install the new starter when it comes in. Drive it a couple of miles and look underneath to see if I can find a leak.

Possibilities:

Rear main?
What else???

I've gotten good at going AWOL on here. Laughing

The starter issue, as it turns out, ended up being the same person who sold me a crapped out motor also sold me a starter that had already filled with oil from a broken rear main seal from his own motor. The oil was where I finally drove my bug long enough for the heat to liquefy the old oil and then short out. New starter fixed the problem.

So now, back to the real fun. Time to upgrade and reinforce Ophelia Spitzenfahrtz.

Gotta head up the hill for a new windshield and speedo cable. Maybe go ahead and jump on some new ball joints. I think new carpet and pan insulation is in the works. Since the 12V conversion was done, I had a friend make me a custom speaker box that fits PERFECTLY into the compartment behind the backseat and still has storage space and it sounds amazing!

Still open to either a new dizzy, or look into having my extra 009 rebuilt... Question

I made a cover for the trunk that also keeps my tools and anything else in my trunk from sliding around.

Before and after (but before final attachment to snug it up):

And now - Ophelia will have a new look. I'm not ready for extensive body work or expensive paint, but I need to address the fact that her "fauxtina" is getting old. So off comes the primer and the odd sections of odd colored paint that preceded me. Plans are to make minor body repairs and address a few spots where I noticed bubbles (rust?) coming up. I started stripping it in thin layers so as to not remove too much or too deep. Although I found thin spots that hit bare metal immediately, they wereonly air bubbles were only between what looks like 3 or four layers of various Bahama Blues which are very noticeable and will become my new "fauxtina". Matched L519 Bahama Blue paint will be mixed and the bare spots will be touched up as well as making the trunk lid match. I will still be leaving the "fauxtina" in creases and tight areas. Complete wet sanding and waxing will follow up after the repairs. So basically, she's going back down to her original color. If it turns out like I envision, maybe a good clear coat?

Before and where I ended today. The black is coming off very slow, but that's fine with me so I don't take off the bahama blue beneath it. (I'm definite the yellow is enamel house paint. The powder and dust from sanding it off was insane. It literally piled up on top of the running board Shocked )

But, all this aside, it's so good to be back bumping and scrubbing along. I've missed it badly. Very Happy

Why yes. Yes I am. Very Happy
Ophelia is SIM bound!

I've been dragging her back and forth to work, down old two lane blacktops, and through the bank drive through where she echoes like mad. Laughing

That video is at around 800, but once she gets up to running temps, it's actually around 1100. It is VERY cold natured, but it is what it is.

I didn't get a show shirt last year for myself. And I work the show!! Laughing

The shirts go out first thing Saturday morning. I can whisk a poster away. I print those myself anyway.

It takes her a good 5 minutes of idling (after 5 to 8 attempts to start) and about 5 miles to get up to temp. If I wasn't running an old 009, I bet I'd be a holy terror. HA!

Found a thread that had listings of rattle can paint that matched original colors. Krylon Catalina Mist was the mentioned match for Bahama Blue so I thought I'd check it out. Found it at the local Hobby Lobby.

Cleaned the rear fender, sprayed on a self-etching primer and once that was dry, I started light layers of the Krylon. I'm blown away. Shocked

I didn't think to take a before pic, but the area I painted (about 12 inches long and 6 inches wide) was spotted pretty badly from having to sand deep into it.

It is definitely an exact match on Ophelia! So I'll finish sanding and repairing then use the Catalina Mist to make the hood and aprons blend in, and then to repair bare spots and places that are a bit thin. I'm tickled! Very Happy

Probably be best to use 2000 grit to wet sand once that's done to blend it all in.

I LOVE the way Ophelia turned out. Bumper airhead is now deep pink, though. Old school pinstriping at Steel In Motion is next...

Thank you so much! Here's what Volkswagnut saw. I'm really loving her new (old?) look much better. Cool

The pinstripes will actually look different once I'm done with them, too.

How much was re painted with the Krylon? My 64 is Bahama and will have so areas to blend after repairs. Any close up shots of a repair or painted area.

Looks good.
