I have some leaks in the steering box on my 72 standard bug. It looks like its leaking from the top cover and the bottom seal. The two little plastic plugs are broken as well.

I want to pull the steering box apart to replace the lower seal and apply RTV for the top cover, but can't figure out how to get the box apart. Can anyone help me?

Also, does anyone know what I can use in place of the little plastic caps on top? They are toast Sad

They are not servicable as far as I know.

Just order a replacement.

Expect to pay about 120 for a good TRW box.

Hello!
Please, can anybody say me if there are different qualities in steering boxes? Because last year I bought a new one, and now I miss my old steering box... Now I am looking for a better unit, becase I want to drive my car safely Smile
Thanks!
Felipe

Yes sir, there are definitely differing qualities in steering boxes. There are a number of Chinese companies reproducing these now. Quality is very hit or miss with those. If you want a quality unit may I suggest Ge.-Ma-Classics. He sells parts from one of my vendors which are tested and verified as the best available. Good Luck

The bitter taste of poor quality lingers long after the joy of the cheap price fades away.
