Can anyone confirm the thread pitch for a 65 Bus? These are 18mm diameter threads. I am pretty sure from measuring using tools in my shop that the thread is an M18X1.0 (left hand).

The reason why I ask is I am working on my brakes, and the out-half of driver’s side axle spindle thread is in poor shape. I cannot find a die nut to chase the threads, and I really don’t want to disassemble of my front beam right now, as I haven’t found a used replacement spindle.

I’ve noticed wheel bearing clamp nuts for beetle and similar VWs, and I was told by one person in my local VW club that they had used a clampable lock nut on their Kombi... is there clamp nut that would fit my 65 Bus?

These are what I could find on-line:

VWC-131-405-669 - WHEEL BRG CLAMP NUT LEFT BEETLE 66-79 GHIA 66-74 TYPE 3 66-74 THING 73-74

http://www.cip1.ca/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC%2D131%2D405%2D669

I wonder if these would fit my 65 Kombi?
-------------------------------------------------

I also found these, not sure of their diameter nor thread pitch but it looks like there is a left and a right:

ACC-C10-4210 - SPINDLE LOCKING NUTS FOR KING PIN FRONT END BEETLE / GHIA 49-65

http://www.cip1.ca/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=ACC%2DC10%2D4210

any insight appreciated!

Thanks for the link... I searched with no luck.

The link mentions using clamp nut from a Bay, but cannot find these in any on-line vendor catalogue. I’ll try and look at a Bay axle to see if my threads are the same or not.

Did a "Search" in the "Classifieds" here for "Spindle Nut" in the "Type 2 Parts" and got these results:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php?...ton=Search

Also did a WWW search for "VW Bus spindle nut":

http://search.yahoo.com/search?fr=mcafee&p=VW+bus+spindle+nut

and:

You are correct.

Driver side = 18x1.0 left hand thread.
Passenger side = 18x1.0 right hand thread

Same specs and bay window spindles. I always prefer to use the bay window lock nuts.

quick search of the bay window classifieds for "spindle nut" http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php?...ton=Search

Returned these two ads
Driver side - http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1086154
Passenger side - http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=822429

Any local VW garage or junkyard should have them. As far as I am aware, they are not available new.

Would you have the clamp-style Bay ones?

32mm for 3/4 ton bus
27mm for 1 ton split bus
24mm for bug

The original tools were a pair, one straight, one with a bend.

Not sure if they're any cheaper than the one you posted a link to, but Viscous Fan wrenches are nice and thin and have a cranked end so you can get at that back nut.
