I'm trying to find it online and on 912 registry and can't seem to find it. But is my 1966 912 supposed to be a 6 volt, or a 12 volt system? I need a new starter and want to get the right one.

I wish I could answer you. I'm shocked you didn't get an answer at the 912 registry. They were very helpful for me with the more obscure 912E of '76.

Both the SR17 and SR68 are listed as fitting. Both are 12 volts.

A New one? Ouch! Or do you mean rebuilt? Usually there isn't much wrong with them. Have you thought of taking it to a local place that cleans and rebuilds them/ (Arlington Armature in Wash DC area does great, reasonable work). What's you battery - 12V?

I got the car with no battery, and yeah either rebuilt or new, one of the two.

I hooked up a battery and i got it to crank very very very slowly. at first 3 or 4 cranks, then only one crank or maybe a half crank when I turn the key. So my guess is the starter is toast.

Any other guesses.

Sound like simply a weak battery.
