|
|
Soooo, The early-style pinch-bolt wiper shafts suck.
They strip.
The later splined style ones are way better.
My 67 has the early style ones, and they park on the left.
It seems that they kept parking on the left until 71,
When they started parking on the right.
Did the 68, 69, or 70 cars have the splined wiper shafts?
It would be sweet to get a wiper assembly, or arms and shafts,
And convert over.
Cause the early ones suck.
Or did i mention that already...? _________________ Bus Motor Build

The 68 and 69 used the same style of wiper shaft/arm attachment as the 67 and earlier did, but I think they got a larger diameter shaft also. The 70 was the first year for splined shafts, and the last year for parking on the left. They are all by their self. The 71 to 73 used splines as well, but they had shorter shafts (due to the fresh air box change, requiring a different wiper motor transmission), and parked on the right.
If you can find a 70 wiper motor assembly, get the 1 year only wiper arms to go with it. It's an almost direct swap (you have to open the holes up for the wiper shaft seals, as they are larger). I did thios to my 65 Notch, and I've been happy since. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

The factory did have a cure for the early ones with the set screw, but you will never find the parts.
They re-designed the wiper arm, and instead of the set screw they had a pinch bolt.
One thing that was a killer on the set screw style, was people turning the wipers on, when the blades were frozen down, or the windshield was covered with snow in the winter.
Also, try and avoid using the high speed, unless you have to.
BTW, Bob, '69 is a 1 year only wiper arms and shafts. Prior to then, the shafts were 8mm diameter. '69, they changed them to 9mm. _________________ Society is like stew. If you don't keep it stirred up, you end up with a lot of scum on the top!--Edward Abbey

Ok, what I have here is 3 different versions of the 12 volt wiper assemblies. Please correct me if I don't get it right. The first 3 photos are the old style shaft, about .250" in diameter. PN 311 955 113 E. Parks on left. 67 - 69?? Second set of 3 photos have the splined shaft and parks on the left. PN 311 955-113K. 1970, I think. Third set of 3 photos have the splined shaft and parks on the right. PN 311 955 113M. The frame is also different.1972--? I will get the photos up loaded tonight. I think I have them in the right order now.
Wish me luck!
Paul
I will be installing the second type on my 66 Squareback.

I recently upgraded my Square this way:
http://www.aircooledtech.com/early_wiper_upgrade/
Another upgrade I did was with the arms. I used a set of Bay bus arms and shortened them. This way I have a beefier arm with stronger springs to hold the wiper to the glass = better wipe.
Just another way to skin the ol' cat. . . _________________ Regards,

Keep in mind that you're going to need a 2 speed wiper switch from a 68 and later VW. You'll have to open the hole up a little on your 66, but IF you trim a little off the early switch knob, around the end, you can use the early knob with the later switch. I found a 90* die grinder will work at removing the material quickly, and using the late escutchion (slotted aluminum nut) will help you determine how much to remove. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I will be using the 2nd version with the splined shaft. Will I have to use the 70 wiper arms? I understand that they are hard to find?

Yes. They are 1 year only parts. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I think they are right and left also. I have heard that some like to use the shorter arm on both sides. If that is true---which is shorter?

I was going to measure them, but I think they're the same length. If 1 is shorter than the other, it's not by that much. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

The left arm is 331 mm long, the right 321.
Source of information: a period SWF catalogue I have. |

Or....you can do it like many later cars did including the 411 and 412....and use equal length arms with one short and one long wiper blade. Ray |

I have a fix for these I'll post soon if I remember. I'd sell it as a "kit" but anyone who ordered one would be pissed and give me bad feedback- it's that simple! _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.
