68 beetle here with h30/31 carb and its giving me trouble. i overhauled it and after i reinstalled and got it warm it seemed to be holding an idle which it wasn't doing before ,thats why i did the overhaul. anyways i got out my carb cleaner spray and hit the throttle shaft (the part that goes into the carb) and sure enough idle speed increases temporarily. : (
what are my options here. its obviously a vacuum leak there ,
should i not drive it? should i buy a new carb? is there a home remedy for this situation?if i drive it will it cause any problems? thanks and please give me some help : () |

With engine off, do you get a squirt of fuel out of the accelerator nozzle when you pull the throttle arm? _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

i ran the engine to warm shut it off then i took the air filter off as i'm not sure what the accelerator nozzle is. i looked into the carb while pulling up and down and tugging a little bit side to side, and i heard nor saw anything that would be a squirt of fuel. sounded and looked dry from all angles while i was doing that.
what could it be im more curious now |

I think what prior poster is asking is when you pull on the throttle arm to operate the accelerator pump, does this squirt of gas drip or show wetness at the throttle shaft bushings. But really, if the car runs good, idles good, etc, you may not need to repair this carb. There are people out there that repair Solex carbs, IE: Art Thraen in Utah, but at todays labor rates it may be easier to replace the carb. Is there any noticeable play/movement in the shaft? |

to elaborate i set my idle speed after it had warmed up for about 10 minutes and then shut it off, later on i then started it back up ,but made sure the idler screw was off the prongs on the cam and tested again and the idle speed was different. if the engine is cooler but the screw in same spot shouldn't my idle speed be the same ? |

I have an idea. I don't think your symptoms are all that serious to not be driving it. You said its not dripping gas, so no fire hazard. I don't know how different the idle speed change is, so don't know where to take this. The bottom line is carb adjustments should be on a fully warmed up engine. In a perfect world the warm up cycle isn't too different to justify different settings. If the car is not overheating and getting decent gas mileage, what more can one ask for? Hope this helps, Bill. |

Drive it.
Thinking either your choke is not set/assembled properly so the choke butterfly valve is opening and closing, or did you take the throttle shaft butterfly apart when you "rebuilt" the carb. If the latter the valve might be not centered, had that happen recently. Fixed by loosening the two screws that hold the valve to the shaft, then closed the throttle all the way, and tightened back down the screws.
See if the throttle arm screw is fully returning or not, could even be your pedal/cable, linkage has a problem. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
