Great job! You are making a bunch of guys jealous doing things that quick! I think I like the Rascal style the best. _________________ Street legal fiberglass rocket ship

Seemed like an eternity...I never drove this car before this weekend...I towbar'd it home. It sat for a year before I started in on it, so actual build time is more like 3.5-4 years, but still...a lot longer than I thought I would be at it, and of course, I aint dun yet... |

Wythac,
Nice job, it looks great. Did you make the side bars or did you purchase them? If you purchased them, do you mind telling me where you got them?
Thanks,
Dave |

Made 'em. Used some extra 1.5" .120 wall DOM and some 1/8" thick x 3"steel plate.
This photo was taken before I added another lateral support. You can see how it ties in with a crossmember inside the pan. I need them as a step to get into the buggy...with the 3" lift and the tall tires, there is no "swingin' your leg" over the door sill. They are strong enough to stand on.

So, how big was the smile on your face last weekend after the first drive?

Mr. Wizard,
I'm a cautious sort. No smiles until drive #2, where after checking all the suspension hardware for tightness, I launched it thru a corner under acceleration that made me glad I had a 5 point harness. Lots of smiles from passers-by...it seems to be a real crowd pleaser. |

Dave,
I of course have no idea what you are talking about.....
Murzi,
Thanks. Obviously, I like the wheels too. Fronts are stock 15" smoothies from the late 50's. Backs are the same, modified by Stockton Wheel for width, offset, and backspacing. They reamed the center out of the stock rim and welded it to a 15x8 rim, with 3.5" backspace and a 1" positive offset. The stock hubcaps were what that effort was all about....adds a real vintage feel to the car, and retains some VW identity in the bargain. |

First day this year in the PNW that was nearly 70 was this week...so now that it is spring I am getting started on my "winter" updates. I had the car running and the weather held long enough in the late summer and early fall of last year for me to take the car on enough sea trials to create a punch list of stuff to work on over the winter.
Project burnout set in, however, and I took to cleaning up the mess I created with four years of fiberglass and metal fab in my shop before I would allow myself to turn a wrench on the car. Just moved it "in to position" for work last weekend.
Much needs to be done under the cowl, and in the cabin with the cowl off, so I got the car disassembled for that last weekend. It is getting a different master cylinder and some residual pressure valves on the brakes. I had some repainting on the pan to do after some brake fluid leakage up front. I have some repaint work on the fuel tank, and a better ground wire for the tank sender, along with some horn wires that need to be run. I am replacing the crappy neo steering coupler, rerouting the speedo cable so the speedo will not "hop". I am also improving the cowl and windshield mounts, welding a stop on the front beam to keep the steering box from turning on the beam.
Wiring gets cleaned up too.
Yes, I am getting rid of the red coupler. Had to repaint the pan under the master cylinder.

cc,
You must have been so dazzled by the purple of the buggy that you didn't see the line of copy that says I am getting rid of the red coupler as part of this project.
Yes, they certainly are a lot of work. Fun, though. |

Yesterday was the first time I saw a new Dodge Challenger with the new "plum crazy" color that I was trying to get when I worked with my paint guy on the custom color on my car....the color on my car is a little lighter shade. Either one is good if you like purple. I can pull it off on the buggy, but I think most feel as I would when they are standing in an auto showroom, wondering: "If I order purple, will I ever be able to sell this thing later?" |

I like the purple Wythac and your car can easily pull it off; that's coming from a guy who paints everything green. I've admired your car for a long time, great stance, great color, great build! |

Here are some close up photos of the identifying features of a Sears Rascal/Terra Buggy Body. Mine is of the "Late(large) Tailbox" variety, probably 70-71.
Dashboard with distinctive "leg" on the passenger's side
Late tailbox
Ridge line runs down the middle of the hood. Hard to see underneath the bumper but there is a big divot for a front license plate.
Package tray area is flat
