Got a little garage time in today and was able to get the panel cut down to size and started to weld it in.

Once I get the rest welded in it's time to take out the engine. I have a leak, that I suspect is a rear main seal, that needs to be addressed and I also have a small section of metal that the engine seal attaches to that needs to be made and welded in. While I have the engine out I'll go ahead and pretty it up a little with a good cleaning and some paint.

I've also decided to go ahead a put dual carbs (mainly for the look) and a extractor exhaust on it. It's a bone stock SP 1500 (original engine) so I'm looking at either Solex PDSITs ($350), Weber ICTs ($450) or Kadrons ($750). Still haven't decided so opinions are welcome.

Hi John, I see you're coming along. That's good. I haven't gotten to the welding point on mine yet but I,m getting close. It is up on the rotisserie now just for final dis-assembly and then off to the soda blaster hopefully this week or next. After that I'll have a better idea of what I've got and then order the necessary sheet metal. Maybe when I start on the bodywork you'll come over and give me some pointers. Take care

you will be happy you did, very worth while investment. You'll have more power and better MPG. Win-Win. I only have experience with Kadrons on 4 different motors and they all ran great and got 28 MPG with a high strung 1776. Look around, that price seems high.

Talk w/ Jeff at Kaddieshack, they rebush and completly go through them and will set them up for your displacement....

That price is from Kaddieshack. Got a very detailed e-mail back from them. The single port manifolds and cut down air cleaners to clear the decklid springs add quite a bit to the base price.

Personally, I would go for the Kadrons over the others, but unless you are prepaired to go through the carbs yourself (following Jeff's instructions . . . http://kaddieshack.com/kadron_rebuilding_instructions.html) . . . get them from KaddieShack! He does a BUNCH of work to the carbs so they will run well on your engine!

I got a VERY good deal on a pair of very low mileage Kadrons off of the "C-List". The shafts were not worn, but one of the carbs looked like it had been used to barbque hot dogs . . . read: non-stop backfiring.
I'm sure that someone bolted the carbs onto their engine and was NEVER able to get it to run right.
When I took them apart, I discovered that the accelerator pump discharge nozzle leaked out the side instead of squirting and the gasket under the needle seat was oval-shaped so that the fuel never stopped flowing into the float bowl! Those were factory defects that I was able to correct.
If you buy your carbs from Jeff, he will have taken care of all that!

So, are we going dual port now Wink
That just seems like a crazy price for Kads... I guess SP manifolds are not easy to come by.
36 Dells are less. Embarassed

No, I'm trying to be a good boy.
If the original engine ever comes out of it I'll be throwing a double handful of hundreds at a 2110. Shocked

SP manifolds = gold hens teeth

$750 is OUTRAGEOUS for a set of Kadrons. I realize that the S/P manifolds are pricey, but still... Shocked You might consider picking up a set of used Kads at a swap meet, from CL, or from the classifieds here. You can easily rebuild them yourself if needed, and tweaking them for your application is not difficult at all. You can also modify the stock air cleaners to work with the deck lid hinges as I've shown here in this thread.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=455700&highlight=

Gene Berg offers a very nice linkage specifically set up for these carbs that would be worth looking into as well. Kadrons will only tolerate very low fuel pressure (2-3psi), so a fuel pressure regulator will be needed if you go this route.

^^^agree thats just crazy. I think AJ Simms has Kads w/ single port manifolds but still in the $675 range Sad
I would do as rcooled suggest and hit swaps or right here out of the samba classifieds...several starting in the $200 range. Im hitting Pomona swap this weekend, I'll keep an eye out for a set. A set of 36 Delortos would be cheaper but would be on the small side if you have a 2110 stroker in your future.

Scored a set of Kadrons!
Thanks to a very awesome individual a set was bought at the Pomona swap meet this past weekend. Now the search is on for a set of single port manifolds. Woohoo!

Well Darrel was even able to find the ultra elusive single port manifolds for a ridiculously low price the very next weekend. So then all the goodies where packed up and shipped. I can't thank him enough for all his help.

Ran a quick compression check before (hopefully tomorrow) pulling engine and found this:
1 - 90
2 - 110
3 - 120
4 - 95
Now I need too decide what to do about that while it's out.

Where'd you get all that crap? Wink
FYI, concerned about your compression test. Warm engine? Valves set?, plugs out?, throttle wide open? Try squirting in a little marvol mystery oil and try it again wet.

Too late. Already on the floor.

My thinking now is if the rings are indeed bad I'll need to change the pistons and barrels anyway so I may have a little machine work done and open it up just a tad. Nothing crazy maybe to a 1776.
