As stated earlier I pulled the engine on Sunday. This morning I talked to samba member "citroen" and as soon as I can strip it down to a long block he will be going through it for me, doing the machine work to make it a 1776 and assembling it back to long block form.

Unfortunately things are going to be slowing way down as far as the ghia is concerned. My wife has been gracious enough to give up her garage parking space for the last couple of years and I promised her she would get it back this year. So with the weather this week being between the teens and lower 40's the ghia is going to be moved to the driveway and covered up.

I'll be spending the winter messing with the motor, rebuilding the Kadrons and buying stuff I'll need to hit it full force this spring/summer. I'm hoping to catch a few good days to finish the welding and maybe get a little filler work started.

Was able to get it stripped down last Saturday when it got into the high 40's and took it to "citroen" on Sunday right before the huge winter storm hit. We got a couple inches of snow and high in the teens/low 20's for most of the week. Today it's in the low 60's and I'm raking leaves in short sleeves. Rolling Eyes

On Wednesday of last week Dennis called and already had the engine stripped down. It had thrown a rod in the past and the case was damaged. He believes the machining will take most, if not all, of it out. The case is being cleaned off site and it's the only thing that won't be done on site. Everything else was checked and he already ordered all the parts and they should be in sometime this coming week and as soon as they hit he'll get started. I will be getting pics of the build as it's done so I'll be able to update soon.

Had a little extra time today and went ahead and tore down the Kadron's. Will start cleaning them tomorrow and get a parts list ready to buy from Kaddie Shack.

And now for the question of the day, I'm looking at exhausts. It's going to be a mild 1776, Engle 110, stock heads & dual Kadron's. The engine had an Empi 3417 two tip extractor exhaust but it's seen better days and needs to be replaced. I kinda like the "stock" look of it but don't know if it will be to restrictive or not, another option would be a ceramic coated two tip TriMil.

I'm not a huge fan of the dual bugpack type exhausts due mainly to the way they hang down and out from the bumper but is that going to be my best option for the engine? I really like the A1 sidewinders but I'm not willing to put that kind of money into it.

Any other options I've not found yet?

It felt like Christmas when I picked it up today. Very Happy

After getting a close up look at the parts that were removed, Holy crap!, I'm surprised the thing even ran. But she sure is pretty now.

Went ahead and ordered the Tri Mil two tip exhaust, ceramic coated. With the black friday deals I was able to get the ceramic coated for what the regular painted would have cost, $158 delivered.

Trying to get my Kaddie Shack order finalized. I have to send my throttle bodies in for rebushing and I can't decide whether to send the bodies in to have them modified for the SVDA distributor from the original engine or to switch to a 009 I already have and be done with it.

Time for a little update.

Last winter with the black friday and cyber monday deals I went ahead and bought most everything that I had left to buy.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Headliner, door panels, window rubber, exhaust, side trim, dash pad and repair panel that I might end up redoing since I'm not completely satisfied with the previous repair.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Got my order in from Kaddie Shack and rebuilt both carbs. Had them rejetted for the 1776 and had to replace a few parts that were worn out or just plain missing.

Finally warmed up enough to get back out in the garage so I got the SP manifolds bead blasted and ready for paint.

Still have some final cleaning and adjusting to do but another item crossed of my list soon.

Now just working on degreasing everything so I can paint it and get it back together and out of the way.

I also recently freed up a permanent garage spot by selling a distraction (corvette) so hopefully progress will be much quicker in the near future.

Getting closer.
I have some cooling flaps and a used thermostat coming in the mail later this week. The heater boxes need a few places welded and then they will be have to be cleaned and painted. Then I'll finish up all the other small things, cover it up and get started back to finishing up the body work.

Hi John. Jumping in this late. This is a nice car and a motivated owner. I would like to ask if you intend to improve the oil system. Oil filter and a sump go a long way towards happy motoring/longevity. I see the case machine work is done.

Thanks Bill. Will probably end up running a sump.

Wow, it's been almost two years since my last update. Since my last post I had a computer crash and lost a lot of pictures. Not a whole lot has gone on because life just keeps getting in the way but a little progress has been made.
This happened a few months after my last post.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I was finally at a point to start some filler work. Overall I've been happy with the repairs I've made but there is one I'll probably end up redoing. That area required a little to much for my liking.

Still lots to do but I'm slowly getting there. Here is how it was when it was put up for the winter.

Time to bring this up to date.
Over the last couple of years I finally finished the bodywork (see pics below).

And finally the most challenging part. Fixing the rear engine lid. I ending up spending a lot of time on it. First repair went easy until i realized you could see it through the vents. d'oh!

The only positive thing I can say about it was that it was quite the learning experience and I'l probably never try it again.

As i was finishing up the body work I started looking for a painter. The guy I had used in the past had a 2 to 2 1/2 year wait. Most I talked to didn't want to even price it. And the few that did priced it high enough that they could retire afterwards. So i decided that I would just paint it myself. Worse that could happen was I'd have to sand the paint back off.

My local PPG dealer wanted $800 a gallon for single stage so I decided to try TCP Global. I ordered a quart to try in the front by the spare tire, the engine area and if it looked good enough I was going to use it on the dash and then order enough to do the rest. The color matched very well. Here it is compared to an original paint door jamb and underside of a gas door.

While I was waiting for the weather to get nicer to start again the painter I wanted to use called. He had a guy that needed to hold off for a bit because he just got laid off so he had an opening. I had the car at his place an hour later. Laughing

If everything goes well I should have it back in about 3-4 weeks.
Then the real fun begins.

That should everything up to date. I'll post more once i get it back.
