I didn't mean my comments to be negative, I was just pointing out my safety concerns re the close proximity of the roll cage to passengers' heads. I always get a shiver when I see that picture of Kathleen in the yellow car. |

Hey. No worries. I was just expecting to be able to put a better seat in the rear, as my wife will probably have to sit there cause the grandson will want to ride shotgun. Just hoping for a bunch of pictures. I'm still loving the build, it gets the mind off all the other crud..

Seriously though the '+2' in Manxter 2+2 means that the rear seats are only meant for occasional use, same as an MGB 2+2 or the likes.
In the examples photographed the rear seat passengers' heads are perilously close to roll bar tubes. I don't think I'd ever consider taking a passenger further than around a parking lot or a showground, I'd never venture out onto the road, Bruce never designed the car as a day-to-day 4 seater.
Do you think they'll ever bring the Resorter/ Tourista back? Now that WAS a 4 seater!!! |
Depends on your passenger. My 7 year old fits in it just fine with no risk of smacking her head on the rollcage. I figure I have at least another 7 years before that might become an issue. _________________ Manxter #39 on a 1971 Pan

On you rear seats of Manxter #29, what seats are they? The Fiberglas ones or custom?

Ok so the Manxter Dual Sports has a Bench Rear seat rather than two buckets like the Manxter 2+2.
I was lucky enough to be taking some pictures of one today to help out a guy who is about to put his up for sale. He is 5'9" and 185lbs ( so he tells me) so I got him to sit in the back so I could get a few pictures for you.

Looking at the second pic the guy could crack his head on that rear hoop going over a speed hump, in fact I did the same while travelling in a friend's buggy on a camp site and got rather a large 'egg' on my head for my trouble; that was at 5 mph.
Let's not get killed or injured by 'safety' devices eh?
Bruce calls the car a 2+2 and lists the 'roll cage' as a 'top support system' so that'll do for me.

Have you ever actually sat in a Manxter or are you just internet engineering comments based on what you think you are looking at ??
I have ridden in the back of several and am yet to hit my head, the guy in the pictures is still alive and not an egg head as you call yourself after riding in the back of some random buggy.
The top support system is called that for legal reasons, the Baja DS Manxter passed all inspections to race with a similar cage design so it is not that far from being a "Roll Cage" just wont be called that.
Comparative to all other buggies on the market it is by far the most comprehensive and offer the best protection from both a roll over prospective and passengers.
Anyway it is what it is I hope the pictures help you understand the space. |

Here is another picture for you, it is my 5 year old in the back of a Manxter 2+2 with stock rear buckets and a 3" child booster on top .
He road successfully on a 1000km offroad trip without hitting his head once

Do you mean me? #39? Mine are the factory fiberglass buckets with headrests added. However, I do need to make some customer buckets because the factory ones are rubbing on the storage locker I added. _________________ Manxter #39 on a 1971 Pan

Yes, I've been in the rear of two Manxters thanks, great buggies and great fun, just not a lot of room in the back for this 5'11" tall 225lb grown up. |

If your head can contact a steel bar in a buggy, you need to assume it will, real hard. |

She's correct. the rear seats don't bolt to the floor. If you want to put different seats in, it will take a lot of modification. _________________ Manxter #39 on a 1971 Pan

jrailer,
I want to do something different than the fiberglass buckets in the back. Playing with ideas. Although the buckets would be the easiest with not many complaints about comfort. Hoping for lots of pictures from other Manxters.

Nothing wrong with the Miata seats unless you just do not like the style.... I would clean them up and use them....

I'll second the Miata seats. They tip, slide, and fit the Manxter nicely. And speakers in the headrest also. I did do the foamectomy on the bottoms to lower them even more. Throw on a set of water proof Wet Okole slip over covers and you're good to go. Custom made with whatewver combo you want. I am not affiliated with them in any way, but really like their covers. They wouldn't make my rear covers, but sold me enough material and padding to have someone local make them. Still on this spring's to-do list.
