Any feedback on what's a good quality set? I've learned that CIP1 sells ones made in China, Wolfsburg West's kit has German cylinders and Chinese pistons, and Vintage Parts has a set made in China but "finished" here in the USA where they do the fine machining.

What other options are there?

Naturally, there are the German sets for more $$, which I assume are good quality, but I'm curious to know what others' experiences have been with those originating in whole or in part in the Far East, or elsewhere (Brazil? Denmark?).

I'm reluctant to put a Chinese heart in my German car, you know?

Cofaps=brazilian 36er's are decent! as You mentioned Kolben's are great, and worth the extra$$$ if you can afford them.

Then you can alway's purchase oversize Original German 36hp pistons and ring sets that are floating around and take original cylinder's and machine them out to size. Then there is also the re-ring O.G Pistons and hown out O.G cylinder's. still many option's to choose from. depending on your $$$situation! Cheer's Cool

Hello-

If you can afford to wait, I would keep an eye out for a German set. I spent quite a bit of money on mine, but they come up for sale every once in a while for ~ $300.

Bump!
There have been some really positive comments posted lately about the 36 HP engine but this topic got little response. Is everyone re-using honed cylinders and good used pistons? Or is eveyone stepping up to something more exotic? How many of you have purchased new pistons? Any feedback is appreciated! Thanks!

I ended up with the Wolfsburg West set, german jugs with the Chinese pistons, which I had balanced, so hopefully it'll run nice & smooth. We shall soon see--just about ready to start building.

No, I don't think so--like I said, it was the off-the-shelf set from Wolfsburg West.

How good of quality are NPR pistons and cylinders? I have a old set of NOS 83mm big bore P&C's I'm thinking about selling in the classifieds.

How far out can the original 36hp cylinders safely be bored to?

78mm. Anything over that is asking for trouble. How do I know this? Even VW made oversize pistons in 77.50 & 78mm. You can go bigger but you have to use different cylinders that will MAINTAIN the same cylinderwall thickness or thicker to prevent warpage from excessive heat. I've even seen someone use an 80mm piston from some unknown application fitted in an overbored VW 36hp cylinder!! You can see oil literally "pouring" out from the underside of engine while on idle!?!?

This is my 83.50mm big bore "HURRICANE" 36hp piston/cylinder assembly that im experimenting with. Note that the cylinderwall thickness is greater than that of a stock 77mm liner.

Are these for a 36 horse or a 1200 40 horse motor? they have 20mm pins.

I thought they were for a 40 horse but now I'm not sure.

40hp

I just used a set like that on a 36hp build I did a few weeks back. Machineing the case and heads is the easy part.........making the barrels fit is very labor intensive. Ran it over the weekend, sounds very healthy. Installed it in a car, but I'm waiting on a starter so I can torture test it.

I have about 3500 miles on my engine now. No complaints, but I would suspect that unless there is some GEXesque problem with the build any minor quality problems with parts will take longer to reveal themselves...
