Is that going on a custom or VW based chassis or are you gonna bring it back with the stock underpinnings? Shame that you live so far away, I'm selling my '55 Continental Coupe. WAY better body but your car has the hood handle and stock gauges still in it . . .
Sweet score regardless, I love an early Porsche with rust and rot, there's just SO much potential and excitement wrapped up tightly in that car. Like contained inertia of motion about to be released ! !
Luck and fun,

yeah it's alot of work but my 43 KDF split was way worse and I got her road worthy before I sold her. I already have the metal to brace the porsche up and believe it or not this is NOT the worst one I've ever had to bring back to life.
I intend to bring her back using the stock underpinnings if I can find all the metal necessary to make her solid. I intend to just go stock all the way with her and lower her just alittle bit. I intend to use the 4 original 16's on them but I need to re-rim 2 of them. I have ALOT of 5 wide wheel's so I'll change her shoes from time to time. Any help with any websites I can go check out to find the correct metal to get would help me out alot. THANKS _________________ ** HELL YEAH I'LL SELL IT TO YOU**

Here's a video link to my little Pre-A, it shows the VW floor pan fairly well.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGG8wHcVd-c&feature=email
If all else fails, you can stick a shortened VW pan under it pretty easily.
Just thought that an option might help, you got some serious rust there.
Luck,

Man what's left s really rough! How about a tube frame and leave in rest of the patina like it is. That will be a real money pit. Is even the chassis number left? _________________ CMC '57 Porsche Speedster Replica and Dolphin boat tailed full pan VW MOD-T Street Buggy |

If it is a '55, it is wearing the wrong hood handle.
It would be interesting to know the chassis no.
Keep 'em flying. |

I am doing a 54 right now in some one similar condition. Contact Restoration Design, out of Canada. I bought over $2000 metal, good quality and good shipping time. On the web. How is your project coming? _________________ Rodbuster, 69 Ghia

If you want to frighten yourself go on www.abcgt.com search for the 356 restoration pages and you will have many, many hours of reading and looking at all the photo's. And this site is the best for bodywork restoration.
Its already clear the car's rust has travelled almost everywhere and as you already know you can't weld to rust and many of your datums have already disappeared by the look of it.
How long have you estimated to get it just welded? Or does time not really come into it? Because it has no separate chassis, just box sections, it does not make it easier. How will you replicate a jig and frame to make sure the dimensions are met? I presume you already have a 'spit'
Nice clear photo's by the way. I must say though be really sure of yourself before you spend a lot of money on so many parts. It seems the older I get the more I see the pitfalls
You knew you would get comments like mine didn't you
Best of luck

Hi Roy yes I've been expecting the comments to come but it's been awhile now since I've looked at this thread I've only repaired the floors so she's not folding in half anymore but she's been put in storage for a few more years until I finish customer cars before I devote 100% of my time to her. I've bought some metal but made ALOT of it myself already. I'll start posting stuff when I am really getting down and dirty on the resto. _________________ ** HELL YEAH I'LL SELL IT TO YOU**

yep it's rough where did you find it at the bottom on a lake!
I hope you got it free for like beer money.
But that a side you got your self an good project. A bit % of the parts ( panels ) are available. I doubt your be building a show queen but certainly the car can be saved and turned into a nice car to just drive !
keep the images coming as i think it will make a great resto to follow.
But as stated here I would support the car with wood so as it will not cause you even more issues.
I would have said welding in a support under the car to keep the front and back from dropping out..
Then work on the sills ( Longs ) to put some structure back in the car then floors even if the floors are just PK screwed in it will stiffen up the car. The rest you can make up.. door bottoms make up.. there is loads you can make from scratch here.
in a way I would love to be involved shame your the other side of the world _________________ WANTED:-

Good to see my old car didn't get left to fully become part of the earth. I remember when I dug that Pre A out of the forest of North Carolina where it sat since the early 1960's. I actually regret getting rid of the car now that I have the time to restore it, but hey good luck. |
