This was tricky, but somehow I managed to fabricate the lower door hinge area. Hammers and a good vice are your friend.
Im almost done with body stuff, cant wait to move on... _________________ 1970 GTV volksrod

Made my Jamar clutch pedal work today. I cad to cut thru the footwall to make the reservoir fit, and im in the process of building a box on the front below gas tank area to seal the hole and make access for fluid. I couldnt justify running a clutch Cable with a stage 2 clutch and twice the ponies...

This thread kinda died, but heres an update;
My motor is in. I dont know how everyone else got it in without cutting stuff, but I had to trim some inner apron metal to get the pullys to clear. You can fit maybe a credit card or two between the driver side valve cover and the shelf. I hope i never have to remove the valve cover.
Need help wiring ecu. Otherwise, I've been working thru all the bugs and its coming right along. Next i need to weld AN fittngs to fuel inlets so i can run hydrolic hose for my fuel line.
Also, i have ony 4" grounclearance under oil pan. Im exploring shortening it 2", any advice is lovely _________________ 1970 GTV volksrod

here's 2 options for the oil pan. Hopefully I don't have to spend any more money on this swap. I can fit a dr pepper can under the pan, currently. _________________ Let my name be Feared at the gates of Hell as I exault the Savior!!

Yea, it looks pretty easy to do, the only thing I have a problem with is getting the recomended 1/4 inch of spacinf on the oil pick-up tube, that has me worried. Especially after all of the problem's Thomas has had with oil starvation. _________________ Let my name be Feared at the gates of Hell as I exault the Savior!!

From what Ive read and understand...
twin turbo setups are going to be a head ache. I bet they can be done but its a pain in the ass.
Dual cams are either going to require cutting or lowering the engine which you can do with a subamount.
It would really be better to stick with an obd1 system. _________________ '59 typ1 rajay turbo

with a quad cam engines there is no getting out of chopping out the bumper mounts in a beetle no matter how you position the engine.
Just convert it to single turbo.
You'll have to do that anyway if you are running aftermarket ECU, the stock system has a really complex setup that controls the flapper valve and waste gates between the 2 primary and secondary turbo.
The twin turbo setup was one of Subarus dumber ideas, designed so soccer mums can drive with power but without feeling the boost.
One of my mates has one in his bug and its taken years of frigging with it to get it running right. _________________ Quick little bug, you got a Porsche motor in that?

Gentlemen, I have read through this thread and after years of researching a VW stroker build have decided to create a suby. I have a 69 type 1 that I've finished an exterior resto on and some basic lowing, brakes, clutch, etc on.
Since I'm at the beginning of this journey, I need to narrow down my search for an engine, engine/trans, or donor car.
First off, if I'm following correctly, it seems like the easiest fit (most straightforward) is the ej25 SOHC? This is what I will begin shopping for.
Second, I noticed mention of being able to fit the subaru trans in the type 1. Is this legitimate? I'm not looking to be a guinea pig. Should I just stick with a Rancho built trans, as long as I wont be winding out on the highway? Or go with the Porsche 5 speed (my original plan)?
Thanks everyone in advance. I'm looking forward to tackling this project. Dependable horsepower makes me smile. |

Idk about the ease of fitting, but i do know that they all require some trimming, id assume some more than others.
As for the subaru trans in it, http://www.subarugears.com/
If you dont already have a rancho, Porsche, or built tranny. Its probably the cheapest way to go in terms of price and reliability, between the trans itself and an adapter plate.
I dont know how well it fits though, and i dont know what fabrication you would have to do. |

Just to throw my two cents in this thread as I really believe a subaru engine is a dynamite conversion. I am currently stuffing an ej22 SOHC in the rear of my 66. I will not have to trim anything except a bit of the lip on the rear breastplate tin where the rubber fastens. It fits as if it should be there all along. I have changed out the fuel injection for a set of 44 dellortos rebuilt by ACE on porsche manifolds feeding into a cut down version on the subaru oem manifold. Ignition will be the edis4 ford setup with megajolt supplying the spark and live mapping. I have a single stock exhaust manifold much like a beetle header feeding into the phatboy muffler. I am just getting close to the end of my complete body off restoration, so the motor mods are next. Great choice. Keep the subaru conversion thread alive. _________________ Matthew Pate

Guys,
Just throwing this out there. You're welcome to flesh out this wiki I started building this afternoon. http://subies4dubs.wikidot.com/
I'm collecting everything I need for my build and waiting for parts at the moment. So while I'm researching the other items I need to buy, or things I need to do next, I'm collecting all the links and resources I've used over the last year and placing them in a wiki. I'm finding it a lot easier than trying to sort through my browser bookmarks. |
