I currently am doing a ej20t, got the adapter plate from outfront motorsports. when I bought my engine it was right around 850$ shipped to me from cali I am in washington.

I dont see the adapter plate on there website. did u have to just call them for it? Maybe i will just swing by since its by my moms house lol.

most of the people here doing the conversion convert the twin turbo engines to single turbo

singles are a better setup anyway and the RHS turbo on TT interferes with the startermotor

Well, I've been playing around with my ECM and changed the turn on temps on one of my fans and it cools just fine with just one...
I am going to try turning up the temp on primary fan and see if I can get it to shut off while moving....
Then I can see if the natural moving air will do the work of the fan while on the move....
Such a difference with 1 fan off, much better.
I think I am going to have summer temp settings and winter temp settings, I like these ECMs.....

Why aren't the factory ECMs not used with alot of the Subaru swaps I see here?
I've done a couple Vanagon/Subaru swaps and a couple Ford 5.0s into Volvos and have always used the factory ECMs, harness with all the factory sensors, etc.. Troubleshooting later on has always been so straight forward and no difference than the factory car it was born in.
What am I missing here?

This was my first subaru swap, I thought about using the factory ecm but I wanted some versatility and some added HP....
I can tune the engine any way I want, something you cannot do I don't think with the factory ECM?
Also the stinger can be used in many applications useing the right program...
My 2001 sohc ej25 gets 165hp with the factory ECM.
With the Stinger ECM it gets 200hp...
Pretty much plug and play?

I guess if "driveability" is as good as factory in all driving conditions, then for me, it would get some consideration.

yeah I've had no problem with driveability so far, its been pretty cold here...
I had a few rough starts but called outfront and was told my idle was to low so made an adjustment and we will see as the winter goes on....

the stock ECU works extremely well and has full self diagnostics
most people do use them

the down sides are yes u can extract alot more power with a aftermarket, the ECU, main loom and engine loom all need to match as they changed almost on a yearly basis and the wiring is unecessarily over complicated

i know mine has a good 70 or so wires running between the ECU and the engine

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

but running on a stock ECU means the engine will live alot longer and gives excellent economy

typically EJ22 like mine get the same city milage as a 1600 vw and way better highway mileage but do it with nearly triple the power of a stock 1600

i know from experience that a 150hp VW engine is not economical in the slighest especially in city traffic

I'm enjoying this thread and getting more interested in a swap. $850 for a delivered low milage Subaru engine is very appealing. Assuming a reasonable set of fabrication and mechanical skills, on average, how much will a guy get wrapped up in all the other items needed for a quality swap? At what points if any will there be the need for professional services? I'm not sure what all is involved in the tuning folks are refering to. Cold starts are a way of life here inthe midwest.... Smile Thanks

the best advise i can give you or anyone considering the conversion is by a donor car

so many people have been done over by buying an engine by itself then having to source all the other parts after
the electrics and computer are different on almost every year
some later ones are map based while earlier are maf based
later engines have immobilors systems which wont run without the relevant hardware from the car etc etc

it works out better in so many ways
more often that not you can pick up a damaged or just run down but running subaru cheaper than an actual engine.
or by the time u paid for a cheap engine then source all the electrical etc parts its more than most donor cars

you also have everything there to make it run and you can actually see it run
you could be buying anything with an engine by itself that you cant see running

I found a complete 2001 2.5 rs for $1000 with 50k and ended up parting the rest of the car out and pretty much breaking even on the engine.
So I had some money in the buget and it went with the ecm.
I went back a forth on using the factory harness ect.
I ended up using the stinger $1500 with the harness.
I just plugged it in and away I went, literally.
From what i've seen you can go either way depending on your budget, skill, time ect.
Do the research it is out here.
I know I new nothing of this setup this time last year....
Cool

Is that the subaru heater core you used? I'm putting an ej20G turbo in with a Link ECU into my '67 bug. Hope to have it done soon.

I hope this helps in making your mind about going Suby.
Here is my Bugaru... I am not an expert or a experienced builder but I liked the way this engine fitted in the car. I used a 2.5 SOCH, all that I had to do is drilling out the side covers and the front balance covers and the engine fit perfectly.

I'm using SDS system for fuel injection ECU . Fitting a T3/T4, the turbo still in mock up stage as you can see I haven't decided where to place the intercooler. Need to run the fuel lines and change the fuel lines at the intake... it is dangerous leaving those lines so close to the turbo...

This car is not going to be modified to fit the radiators.

The heater core I used was from a friend, he had a Jeep project and was going to use it in that?

It was for a CJ5 not sure on the brand, I'll try to look for an Id on it...

I'm placing the radiators under the car, under the transmission on each side, there is a 3rd radiator that fit in the beam no fan I havent received it yet. I saw a picture once of a fellow that installed his Setrab oilcoler under the tranny... I liked the idea. The radiators are going to be jointed by a bridge higher than the radiators (above the tranny) to evacuate any air bubble into a catch can in the engine bay... I hope that it works.

A small update... just got the EFI system finish, not running yet because I still bulding the exhaust... it will be easier not installing the turbo now but for sure that something that I have to decide very soon.

Installed 16x7 fuchs w/ 225's on the back with spacers just to see the look... now trying to fit those tires inside the fender Twisted Evil I hope this car is sleeper enough... Twisted Evil
