I have a ecotec LNF turbo motor here and running in a test stand just waiting for my next buggy I have the big intercooler my ecotec made 260 bone stock
I am going to do the ZZperformance cam and their tune they have pretty much promised me 320/330 hp which should shove a 1500lb buggy along pretty smartly
my current car weighs 1188lbs with a full tank of gas and my current bunny motor makes 208 hp and 196 ft/lbs torque its a 2088cc stroker built by myself and my friend Denny McNutt the owner of the former Mini Performance and Specialities in Toledo Ohio |

|
|
Just picked my first sand rail up last week. I've always wanted one, and finally got the okay. Grew up a huge VW enthusiast, but haven't owned one in years. I was always a bug guy, and as a young man mostly had them really low with shaved handles and loud music. lol
This should be some fun. It was built in 2007 in Idaho. I was told it has a 1915, and it has a 6rib (091) trans. It's leaking some oil, and I'm going to look into that tomorrow evening. Fires right up an runs well, but I've not had a chance to really drive it much. Went around the block a couple times at the guys house I bought it from, then put it on a trailer and drove it home. I live in Kansas, and bought it in Idaho. It still fires up and runs fine, but I am wondering if I need to rejet the carbs or do any adjusting?? Boise is higher then I am by ~1000' so I don't want to run lean and cook things..[/img] |

I saw dirt, then you turned around. Gaawwww! What a tease. lol |
ME too!!!
I suppose Samba could use a section for Pavement-Only buggies, like most of the fiberglass cars are. This IS AFTERALL...the HBB "Off-Road" section...The chassis may have been designed for offroad use, but there seem to be a lot of guys who wouldn't get their buggy dusty or even worse...MUDDY for any reason. Look at TruelineBob's cars above. With street tires and what is acceptable in his state for a windshield. Beautiful rails all.
I'm not posting on here to say those people are wrong. That's not MY cup of gas, but a man can do as he wants with his buggy.
The race buggy in my avatar was being built to be a dual-purpose street-registered AND fully legal offroad buggy for California where the government strongly disapproves of such. I got diverted by friends who wanted to go offroad racing and my car was close to race ready. But it would never have had issues with going offroad. So a street registered buggy is not so foreign to me.
Where I have issues is when I go to answer a technical question about a guy's buggy and after much discussion, learn that it's a street-only car, not an offroader, and all the advice (and the effort and time invested) I have just provided goes out the window as wrong for his application.
There are plenty of posts on pavement-only offroaders. I've thought of this many times. Perhaps now is the time and the place to get others thinking about separating the street-legal only group into their own section or at least directing them into another more applicable section. I feel they deserve it. What do others think of this?
I'm trying to post another thread in the HBB Offroad, but it's sending me to a Captcha page in the middle of creating the post.... _________________ Richard

I use mine for off road as well as street, try to go to Glamis twice a year at least, go to Cal City for New Years see ya there, love Johnson Valley think its my most favorite spot, Barstow, El Maraje the list goes on and on.
Wiring mess I had to fix, that was fun.
Had a 1600cc engine in it, it wouldn't make it up Olds at Glamis. Friends here helping me build my 2276, cant wait to try it now didn't get to take it to Glamis this Thanksgiving screwed up the trans.
almost done
I will have to get some new pics there has been a lot of changes since these. |

Found some.
Put a 3" lift and make a working hood, because I was tired of taking it off to work on the electrical.
Had to redo the dash because the steering column did'nt go through it anymore.

OK I'm not really a show off kind of guy, but here is my 68 rail.
yes it is homebrew, yes I'm a big fella. yes it is a work in progress.
here is how it looked when I found it
This was the first phase of rebuild, moving the windshield frame forward and clearing out an area to get my legs in to access the pedals
I also had to rewire everything as there were splices everywhere I pulled about a 5 gallon bucket of old wire out, and replaced with full length runs
This is a work in progress and doing it all on a very steep budget or even free. |

An old Funco SS2 we are restored for this years NORRA race. In the background is a very famous old Funco known as the Bel-Ray Bullet driven by Malcolm Smith and Bud Feldkamp. We are taking to cars to NORRA this year!

Do you know any history on the red SS2?
I Tech inspected the Smith/Feldkamp car a number of times. Scott McKenzie did a great job building and prepping it. While it was racing, I was putting together my HiJumper you see in my avatar. I stopped by McKenzie's Offroad shop to buy some parts. When I told Scott that I had put on long shock towers to use 8" travel shocks, He said I shouldn't have bothered. He showed me how he got 10" of travel using reinforced stock towers and stock trailing arms with the stock lower shock mounts on the Smith/Feldkamp car. My car already had 10-1/4" with the 8" shocks on tall towers and stock lowers, and I figure the longer shocks provide more oil volume for more resistance to fade. I don't remember which shocks Scott had on that car to fit the stock mounts and get 10" of travel, but I'm sure it has nicer shocks now.
Scott cut off the pinch weld on the towers and used a length of 1" x 1/4" strap stock wrapped around the towers, and welded both sides to reinforce them. There were kits sold for many years for that wrap. That bar stock was pre-formed to fit. But it's very easy to bend straight stock to fit as you weld it to the tower. He also drilled the top mount bolt hole through for a 12mm through bolt instead of the factory tapered 10mm thread bolt.
Good luck in the NORRA 1000! _________________ Richard
