Do you legally need the horn button on the steering wheel? My Volksrod will have a detachable wheel (1929 Ford) and I can't figure out a good way to hook up a button. Can I just put it on the dash or a remote console?

And I think that 2/3 of bajas and manxs have it like that

On all the nostalgia-type kits (a Bugatti, a Fraser Nash and a Tiger Roadster for myself and an assortment of MGs, Gazelles, SS100s and Bugattis with an occasional VW-based XK120 or Healey for other people), I always put the horn control in with the other toggle or rocker switches. The State Police never gave me any trouble with the switch-operated horn when it came time to register those kits.

What you really need is a pistol grip shifter with a "trigger" or two for various functions. I really like what I've seen with the incorporation of motorcycle controls, I'm waiting for someone to use a multifunction game controller ( fighter pilot joystick?) as a shifter knob. Twisted Evil Probably has already been done, still could be relatively cool. Cool

They used a game joystick in the Mach 5/6 in the movie....

No they do not legally have to be in the center of the steering wheel. For many years Ford had them set up so you had to push the signal light switch in towards the steering column. Very inconvenient. Wherever you put it make sure it is easy to get to in emergency situations.

When I first got my buggy, the horn was hooked up to the dimmer switch on the directionals.

I have never seen legislation specifying the location of the horn button but there is only one way to properly answer questions like this.........consult your local vehicle legislation.

Illinois vehicle codes can be found here http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/ilcs/ilcs3.asp?Act...le%20Code.

What year/model are you referring to? I am familiar with most North American cars since the 1940's and I have never seen this.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

This is for the 82 Ford Escort. EXP, Granada
Same applies to 78 and up Fairmont, Merc Zephyr, Capri. There are many more models. Late 70's to early 80's.
As you can see in the pic, there are actually 2 arms coming out of the multifunction switch.
