Continued my struggle with the 54 last night. The adjustable springplates are now mounted.
Tested the Porsche brakes again. Dont worry... the red paint will be gone soon
The rear is now more or less ready except that I need some mount for the shock in the rear. Anyone know if there are shock mounts that can be bolted on?

Wow very nice progress. What a transformation to the before state!
Ken made a very neat bolt on solution for the shock mounts:
Have you shortened the front nose cone grommet? I have read that when you cut the front grommet a bit the setup with the nose cone adapter dosen`t move 1/4 backwards. |

Wow! That is a really nice solution. I am gonna copy that. Regarding the nose cone grommet... I havent done any cuts. I am not sure what you mean... Might be that I am not that fluent in english _________________ ----------(VW)----------

Superb thread - I have really enjoyed catching up with this one. Regarding the nose cone front donut 'grommet' trimming, if you buy a concept 1 bus nose cone kit for fitting a later tunnel box in your early bus (or split bug) it pushes the trans back 1/4" - see the ad here:
http://store.concept1.ca/store/product/56970/Bus-Nose-Cone-50-59-COMP./
You have bought the adaptor which doesn't have the same warning so it may not be an issue for you: http://store.concept1.ca/store/product/52550/C-1-T2-Nose-Cone-Adapter/
A solution to the pushing back of the trans by 1/4" is suggested for trimming back the donut here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=508346

Go with the Concept 1 mount.
It doesn't move anything back if the front rubber mount is prepped right. I cut 1/4" off the front rubber mount and everything fits in stock position just like it should. I'm running a 2180 and a later trans in my BD and it has held up just fine. We have run these mounts in buses driving from Canada to Cali 2 times (and many more kms since) with no issues. |
I have subsequently bought Concept 1's nosecone kit and plan to trim my donut mount - I just haven't got to it yet.
Keep up the superb work and great updates
Cheers,
Dave |

Thanks for the pics of the rear shock mount... Really neat!
Another thing... I will start working on the front beam tomorrow. I realize that I need to raise the shock mounts in the front. What do you think about swapping shock mounts from a beetle front beam and weld it to the barndoor front beam?
How much do you in general need to raise the shock mounts on a barndoor frontbeam if you wanna go low? _________________ ----------(VW)----------

I don´t agree...
That might be the case for a later split bus but a barndoor has another beam. It is much more similar to a beetle beam. I went out to the garage and managed to find a beetle beam in the storage area I got.
The left one is the beetle beam and the right one the barndoor beam.
And a picture from the front...
I think this is going to be good... It will even look stock _________________ ----------(VW)----------

Did my planned operation yesterday. First I cut the barndoor shock mounts.
Then I did the same on a beetle beam... And here is the finished beam. There is more to do on it as you see
Tried it on and it seems to work...

Some more progress over the passed weeks...
Front beam is now in and everything fits. It was a bit worrying to mount it back after the amount of welding that has been done to the body but it seems ok.
Yesterday I hooked the beam up with some beetle spindles just to see how things line up.
I just had to try the CSP brake disc on...
And of course then a mock up with the rim choice!

I need new link pins for my barndoor. Do you know if the set for 55-63 will fit or is there a barndoor version for sale somewhere?

Ok so this week I focused on getting on with the rear brakes. I got hold of a local company capable of gluing new brake material on the old brake parts and some brand new rear brake cylinders from Sierra Madre.
Here they are mounted on one side:
And after that I could mount the E-brake cables.
I still got the right side left to do. I had to do some adjustments to the length of the e-brake cable tube in the rear so it took some time but this is left side... almost done:

Looking good. Did you get an answer to the link pin question? If there is a difference what is it? I have some 20mm link pins and bearings at home. I knew they were pre 63 but don't know if they'll be any good for your bus or not... Cheers. Dave |

I thnk they are all the same since they are 20 mm untill 1963. I think I have found a couple of NOS ones that I need to buy. _________________ ----------(VW)----------
